Military History:23 Aug 49 - Conscripted into National Defense Ministry Independent #766th Unit, HOERYONG (會寧) vicinity of Korea-Manchuria-Soviet Border. 1½ months basic training consisting of lectures on military subjects, rifle marksmanship, dismounted drill, forced marches. Remainder of period consisted of occasional field training and daily details within camp area. Approximately 2,000 men in Independent 766th Unit.
24 Jun 50 - Independent 766th Unit alerted. Departed by rail from HOERYONG.
1 Jun 50 - Independent 766th Unit arrived at YANGYANG. Continued southward on trucks.
22 Jun 50 - Independent 766th Unit arrived at UTCHIN via KANGNUNG, SAMCH’OK.
5 Aug 50 - Independent 766th Unit departed UTCHIN on foot. Continued in general southsouthwest direction over dirt roads and through forests.
13 Aug 50 - Independent 766th Unit arrived in area (interrogator’s note: unknown, PW tag: IPAM (立巖) probably between YONGCH’ON and P’OHANG DONG). No other unit observed in area.
1400, 14 Aug 50 - PW captured in small village near Independent 766th Unit encampment by ROK unit.
Remarks: National Defense Ministry Independent 766 Unit was organized at HOERYONG May 49. Majority of officers and NCO’s of this unit were Korean veterans of the war in CHINA. Orders to this unit came direct from National Defense Ministry, P’YONGYANG. Other units, if any, under National Defense Ministry, unknown.
