The 1st Company was also called “HORANGI” (Tiger in Korean)

PW was inducted in SINCHUN 24 August 1949, remained 10 days and was sent to YANGYANG. After 15 days, sen to KAWSONG for basic tarining for 20 days. There after was sent to 38° parallel on 4 trucks carrying 160 men. Convey consisted of 2 six wheel drive and 2 four wheel drive of Russian make. 4 jeeps of Russian make carried 26 officers. PW’s unit was performing garrison duty at 38° parallel until they started to cross the 38° parallel. At KANGNUNG 1st Regiment was combined with 2nd and 3rd Regiments which arrived from YANG KU and CHULWON, and called the 8th Division. The entire distance was covered in 14 days (38th parallel to CHANGIL DONG).
7th Division was ahead of 8th Division but distance between the two units was unknown to PW. He was told that 7th Division changed is course about 12 km before CHANGIL DONG and the 8th Division took the offensive against the UN Forces with TAEGU their main objective.
180 EM and 20 officers were left in the 1st Battalion at the time of PW’s capture (11 Aug 1950). Platoon leader and Assistant leader were killed. Entire unit was composed of North Koreans.

Weapons:
The 1st Battalion was composed of 850 EM and 50 officers. Each man carried M1891/30 rifle and M1938 carbine (Russian make). 2 - 14.5 mm PTRD-41 per company. All assistant squad leaders of the infantry company carried DP Light machine gun. PPS M1943 Tommy gun was carried by DP Light machine gun ammunition supply men and squad leaders. PPSH M1941 tommy gun was also carried by squad leaders of infantry company but was replaced on account of cleaning difficulties. 1st Battalion of 3rd Regiment had 16 Maxim Heavy machine gun, 1st Company, 2nd Company and 3rd Company were equipped with 2 each; 1st, 2nd and 3rd Company of 1st Battalion had 4 - 82 mm M1941 each. All officers of PW’s unit carried TT M1933 Tokarev pistol. Source has not seen and make of weapon except Russian.

Armor:
8th Division used 2 medium tanks T-34 but source did not see any weapon close enough to give full descriptions.
