FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0769) 9 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: HAN, Kuk Hyon (韓國□)

DATE & PALCE CAPTURED: 031600 Sep 50 at YODUK DONG by ROK Army.

2. T/O OF PW’s UNIT:
17th Div was composed of two (2) Tank Bns (1st & 2nd) and Inf elements.
2nd Tank Bn consisted of 20 tanks (T-34/85 mediums).
Each Tank Bn consisted of five (5) man crew.
1st Tank Company was composed of two (2) Tank Platoons, (1st & 2nd).
1st Tank Plt consisted of two (2) tanks.

Tank Markings:
17th Div Commander - Tank No 700
2nd Tank Bn CO - Tank No 721
PW remembers only two (2) other numbers; began with No 721 and up.
PW stated that 2nd Tank Bn’s numbers began with No 721 and up.
Approx six (6) tanks were still operating at the time of his capture on 3 Sep 50. Other tanks were destroyed or left behind alongside the road due to defective operational condition. Each tank carried 55 rounds of 85 mm ammo and 2,750 rounds of LMG ammo for two (2) LMG’s.

3. DISPOSITION OF PW'S UNIT:
2nd Tank Bn (6 tanks) was supPOrting elements of 17th Div in the vicinity of YODUK DONG on 3 Sep 50.

4. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNIT:
2nd Tank Bn had 20 tanks when they lert their station near SONG HO RI (approximately 16 km E of P'YONGYANG) on 19 Aug 50. At place of capture the Bn had six (6) tanks of which four (4) had been destroyed by air attack on 3 Sep 50.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted into the NK Army While attending school in P'YONGYANG on 4 Jul 50. Received 1 1/2 months of basic training at SUNG HO RI. The tank training ground was transferred to its present location from P'YONGYANG because of enemy air attacks.
2nd Tank Bn (Composed of 20 tanks) left SUNG HO RI via road on 15 Aug 50 and arrived MIRIN on the same day. At MIRIN all tanks with crew were loaded on train cars and departed, passing through SARIWON & KYONGSONG and arriving in WONJU on 27 Aug 50. Tank were unloaded there and headed southward, passing TANYANG, YONGJU, ANDONG and into YODUK DONG where PW and four (4) others were captured by US troops The Bn had lost 14 tanks by air attacks or abandoned them alongside the roads because of engine trouble. Only six tanks reached YODUK DONG. Four (4) of these six (6) tanks were destroyed and two (2) were captured on 3 Sep 50. PW stated that they slept in tunnels during daylight and traveled during the night by train.

PW observed about six (6) to seven (7) Russians (in civilian clothing) on the training ground in YODUK DONG between 4 July - 15 Aug 50.

7. ARMOR:
See T/O and E of PW’s Unit.

8. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLY:
Troops received two (2) day's rations when they left SUNG HO RI on 15 Aug 50.
Each tank received 55 rds of 85 mm ammo and 2,750 rds of LMG ammo.
They did not use a single rd of ammo and were captured.

9. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
Objective of PW's unit was YONGCHON (date of attack unk).

10. MORALE:
The morale of PW' s Unit was very low because the members of PW's unit were forced to join the N Korean Army while they were attending school.

11. INTERROGATORS REMARKS:
PW was cooperative, however military information is limited due to short period of military service.
