FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0763) 9 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

3. DISPOSITION OF UNITS:
The 657th Unit (13th Regt) was last seen (3 Sep 50) 1 1/2 km W of HAMAN.

4. PRESENT ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF UNIT:
The 6th Div Engr Bn was wiped out, on 3 Sep 50, 1 km W of HAMAN. The few troops who survived are hiding out in the mountains.
The informant estimates that the 6th Div lost 50% of its troops (Killed or wounded).

5. PERSONALITIES:
2nd Lt; CHO, Song. Chil (조성칠), age 25, 1st. Plt Ldr, 1st Co. Killed 3 Sep 50 1 km W of HAMAN.
Capt CHANG, Won Ho (강원호), age 24, 1st Co CO. Killed 1 km West of HAMAN.
Maj LEE Pyong Sun, age 30, Engr Bn CO. Either been taken POW or killed 1 km West of HAMAN.
Maj Gen PAN Ho San, age 45, 6th Div CG.
Russ Advisors: One (1) Russian military advisor, rank Capt was seen with the Div Hq, 8 kms South of HAMAN.

6. UNIT & PERSONAL HISTORY:
Inducted 2 May -1950 at SARIWON with 300 others. Between 3 May to 23 Jun 50 the informant was trained as a mine detector technician. On 24 Jun 50, the Engr an marched by night to KAESONG. From KAESONG the Engr Bn marched by hight through SEOUL, SUWON, CHONAN, CHINJU, PANSONG, KUMBUK, TONGCHONG and arrived at HAMAN 29 Aug to, 1 km W of HAMAN. On 3 Sep 50, the an was annihilated. The informant deserted his unit after reading leaflets dropped by us aircraft.

7. ARMOR:
29 Aug 50, three (3) SU-76’s were seen in the village of TONGCHONG.

8. ARTILLERY:
Two (2) 76 mm Field Guns and three (3) 45 mm AT Guns were seen in TONGCHONG.

9. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
The elements of the 6th Div lived off the land. The S Korean (Communist) Peoples Committees were largely responsible for the Division’s food supply.
The front line troops received limited ammo. The 6th Div’s Ammo Supply Point is believed to be in TONGCHONG.
Since 28 Aug 50, the front troops received fresh supplies of ammo. Ammo was so scarce that the Engr Bn had to give all its ammo to the 13th Regt (657 unit) on 1 Sep 50. Because the informant’s unit did not have ammo, they were annihilated.

10. REPLACEMENTS:
Unknown because the informant's did not receive replacements since crossing the 38th parallel.

11. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
The troops were told never to surrender, and if capture was inevitable, to commit suicide.
The troops were told that their mission was to take MASAN.

12. MORALE:
The troops. with little exception among the sqd ldrs and officers, have little will to fight.
The causes of low morale among the troops were: lack of sleep & food, 1 large numbers killed & wounded, lack of ammo, propaganda leaflets dropped by aircrafts and because most of the troops feel that they will not win.
The troops are fighting only because they are forced to. The troops were reminded dally by their sqd ldrs and plt ldrs that, unless they fought, they would be shot.

13. US POW'S:
Three (3) US POW's were seen in CHONAN o/a 5 Aug 50.

14. S KOREAN SENTIMENT:
The S Koreans in newly occupied territory were mostly anti-communist but were afraid to voice their opinion. The people were anticommunist because the N Korean Army confiscated their food and forced them to join the army.

15. CHEMICAL, MEDICAL & BACTERIOLOGICAL WARFARE:

The informant is very sincere although his information is limited. He was a deserter.
