PW was cooperative, but due to short military service information was very vague. Not recommended for further interrogation.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:25 Jul 50 - Approx 300 S Koreans, including PW, were conscripted into the NKPA at TONGTAE-District, SEOUL. This group was designated as the 2nd Bn of the 3rd Repl Regt. They received basic training until about 17 Aug 50. Basis training consisted of close order and squad tactics.
O/a 17 Aug 50 - The 3rd Repl Regt (1st, 2nd and 3rd Bn’s) departed SEOUL.
O/a 27 Aug 50 - The 3rd Repl Regt reached a point approx 8 km W of PONG IM-DONG (鳳林洞) via CH’UNGJU and ANDONG. The 1,100 men of the 3rd Repl Regt were attached to the 1st Regt, 8th Div as replacements.
O/a 28 Aug 50 - The 1st Rest of the 8th Div advanced to a hill located 4 km W of PONGIM-DONG. All the replacements were issued M1891/30 rifles, 100 rounds of ammunition and 4 hand grenades.
O/a 30 Aug 50 - The 1st Regt engaged in battle against the ROK troops. The battle continued for about 3 days.
3 Sep 50 - PW was separated from his platoon after fierce battle.
4 Sep 50 - PW was captured by ROK troops while wandering around the village of PONGIM-DONG,
Unit Organization and Strength:
1st Regt, 8th Div - 3 rifle Bns. Supporting units, unknown.
Rifle Bn - 3 rifle Co's, 1 HMG Co. Other supporting units, unknown.
Rifie Co - 3 platoons, 4 squads per platoon, (8-10 men per sqd). Squad leaders and asst squad leaders armed with SMG’s. Riflemen armed with M1891/30 rifles. PW did not know the number of HMG’s and LMG’s.
Casualties:
About 50% of the men in the 3rd Co were killed or wounded. Casualties in other companies, unknown.
Communication:
PW stated that all the roads which he saw on the way from SEOUL to PONGIM-DONG were in fairly good condition.
Intentions:
PW heard from his platoon leader that the 6th Div would advance to PUSAN through the mountains without at tacking YONGCH'ON and T'AEGU.
Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of the 1st Regt, 8th Div was very low, because most of the troops were S Korean replacements.
