FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0705) 4 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW spoke freely and his information seemed reliable. However, information was limited due to short period of military service.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
24 Jul 50 - Approx 3,600 S. Koreans including PW were conscripted into the NKPA at SEOUL. The 3rd Replacement Regt was composed of these 3,600 men. PW was assigned to the 2nd Bn of the 3rd Replacement Regt. PW trained for a week. Training consisted of close order drill, squad tactics and functions of Japanese M .38 rifles. The troops did not receive any weapons while they were in SEOUL.
10 Aug 50 - The 3rd Replacement Regt departed SEOUL.
19 Aug 50 - The 3rd Replacement Regt reached ANDONG (安東) via CH’UNGJU (忠州). The 3rd Replacement Regt remained at ANDONG for 4 days. During the 4 days, they received political training.
24 Aug 50 - The 3rd Replacement Regt departed ANDONG.
25 Aug 50 - The 3rd Replacement Regt reached 8 km S of UISONG (義城). PW estimates that approx 1,800 men were attached to the 2nd Regt, 8th Div and the other 1,800 men were attached to the 3rd Regt, 8th Div. All these men were attached to the 8th Div as replacements.
Approx 500 men including PW were attached to the 3rd Bn, 2nd Regt. Only the officers, sqd ldrs and asst sqd ldts were left in the 3rd Bn at this time. The 2nd Regt remained there for 2 days. The troops were issued weapons 27 Aug 50. PW did not know the location of the 3rd Regt after 26 Aug 50.
30 Aug 50 - The 2nd Regt advanced to a point approx 1 km S of HWASAN-DONG. The 2nd Regt divided into companies and took positions along the bills located 1 km S of HWASAN-DONG and 1.3 km E of HWASAN-DONG.
2 Sep 50 - The battle started (about 0600) on 2 Sep 50. The ROK troops had more fire power and the N. Koreans suffered heavy casualties. PW's company suffered about 80 casualties. PW surrendered to the ROK troops who advanced halfway up the hill which PW's company was defending.
About 40 men in PW's company were still fighting against the ROK troops when PW surrendered 2 1600 Sep 50. The 40 man could not surrender because the N. Korean officers and squad leaders were behind them with submachine guns. PW said that the 40 man were not aiming at the ROK troops.

Foreign Elements:
PW saw about 2 or 3 Russian officers riding on a jeep at SEOUL mid-Jul 50.

Enemy intentions:
Objective of 8th Div - YONGCH’ON (永川).

Capability of Unit:
Morale: Morale of the troops was very low, because the troops were S. Korean replacements. However, there were communists (15-20%) among the S. Korean replacements who were willing to fight for the N. Koreans.

4. GENERAL:
Weapons and personnel: 2nd Co, 3rd Bn - about 120 men, 2 x HMGs, 6 x LMG’s, 6 x SMG’s, riflemen armed with M1891/30 rifles. Casualties as of 2 Sep 50: PW estimated that about 80 men were killed or wounded in his company.
Note: PW did not have any information above Co level due to his short military service.

Armor: PW observed 2 x T-34/85 tanks and 2 x light tanks at a point approx 8 km S of UISONG o/a 26 Aug 50.

Artillery: PW observed 2 x 122mm Howitzers (type unknown) being hauled by ox carts south between CH'UNGJU and ANDONG (exact location unknown) o/a 21 Aug 50. PW also observed 2 x 122mm Howitzers (type unknown) being hauled by 2 trucks 3 km South of UISONG o/a 25 Aug 50.

Supplies: Ate average twice a day. Received rice from local farmers. Last received 100 rounds of ammunition at HWASAN-DONG 31 Aug 50.
