FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0716) 3 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHANG Ho Sun (張孝淳) (장호순)
AGE: 23
RANK: Cpl
DUTY: Asst Sqd Ldr
UNIT: 7th Div (Code No 625), 2nd Regt (Code No 728), 2nd Bn (Code No 728Na), 1st Co, 1st Plt, 1st Sqd
PLACE OF CAPTURE: At a point 8 km East of CHINJU, 1st Co together with the Bn Hqs, to which PW was assigned, was ordered to replace the 2nd & 3rd Cos which advanced to a point 8 km East of the NAM River. They were suddenly attacked by US & ROK forces from hills to the front. The company exchanged machine gun and small arm fire with US and ROK forces after realizing they were outnumbered they were ordered to take cover in the ditch along a dirt road 6 m wide where tank tracks were observed, PW hid in this ditch for approx one hour before he was called upon to surrender by ROK forces. PW was captured by ROK troops. PW observed a large number of dead NKPA troops in the ditch where he was hiding. He was told by the ROK troops that the Asst Co CO was also captured,

Observed 9 Russian military advisors at P’YONGYANG on 20 Jun 50. The advisors wore Russian military uniforms without epaulets.

Capability of Unit:
PW’s own unit - efficiency: Most personnel of the 2nd Regt were formerly members of a border guard unit and received less than one month infantry training.
Morale: Morale of the 1st Co became low as they neared the battle line due to lack of adequate equipment and attacks by US aircraft.
Fatigue: Troops of the 1st Co were quite fatigued due to lack of food and two month’s marching,

Supplies:
Food was never supplied and unit confiscated food from areas they occupied. 70 rounds per man were issued in N KOREA. Another 40 rounds were issued at CHINJU for attack on PUSAN. Source of other details unknown.

Mission:
The mission of the 7th Div was to occupy MASAN by 30 Aug 50 end the 6th and 9th Div were to envelope MASAN from on either flank. The final objective of the three Divs was to occupy PUSAN by 31 Aug 50.

Condition of terrain behind his line:
Roads were in quite good condition. RR unknown. Bridges all were destroyed. Roads raised with sand bags were used.

Airfields:
An airfield was observed 4 km E of P’YONGYANG from a distance of 2 km and one fighter was observed taking off from this airfield but further details were unknown.

3. GENERAL:
Strategic EEI:
Source of equipment: Equipment was brought from RUSSIA in trade for food from KOREA. The equipment was transported by rail through CHONGJIN to P’YONGYANG. Observed approx 60 US PsW marching north in column of fours at NAMWON in early Aug 50. The US PsW were fatigue uniforms minus head gear. Twelve NKPA guns with PPsh SMG accompanied PsW. The US PsW seemed to be in good physical condition. PW heard from fellow soldier that the US prisoners were treated well. PW and the US PsW were interned at a camp located in the north portion of P’YONGAN NAMDO, and are receiving Communist indoctrination.
