FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0710) 5 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Informant was intelligent and seemed especially certain as to the disposition of the 13th Div. Very little information on SEOUL due to the fact that greater part of his stay in SEOUL was spent in hiding. Most of information contained herein is hearsay.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
19 Aug 50 - Departed SEOUL on foot. Followed main highway up to KUMCH'ON via SUWON, OSAN, CHO'NAN, TAEJON, YONGDONG.
28 Aug 50 - Passed KUMCH’ON and headed NE from the KUMCH’ON-TAEGU highway and arrived KUNWI.
29 Aug 50 - Crossed NAKTONG River, approx 1.5 km NW of INDONG, and arrived CHANGCHONG.
2 Sep 50 - Captured by infantryman of the 23rd Regt, 13th Div, in the eastern foothills of YUHAK SAN. Questioned very closely by regt'l officers, including the Regt'l CO. Informant stated that he was a native of TAEGU and was heading there, because he heard that TAEGU was in the hands of the NKPA. Also questioned as to his geographical knowledge of the country between YUHAK SAP and TAEGU. Informant was ordered to remain with the 23rd Regt’l Hq and act as guide.
4 2030 Sep 50 - 23rd Regt'l Hq moved to TABU-DONG. Informant managed to escape and remained in the mountains south of TABU-DONG for the night.
5 0630 Sep 50 - Walked Up to a US artillery unit 4 to 6 km N of CHILGOK and surrendered.
Dispositions of 13th Div as of 4 2030 Sep 50
Division Hq - Vicinity of HAP'ANDONG (Overheard instructions given to runners).
23rd Regt Hq - Lost all contact since 2 2400 Sep 50 with the three battalions (Regt CO departed Hq for the front lines 2 2400 Sep 50). Hq group, including signal platoon and guard platform, moved to a point 1 km SSE of TABU-DONG. Met 21st Regt, strength 300 to 400, at this point.
19th Regt - Engaged in severe fighting with UN forces 2 km E of TABU-DONG. Strength unknown (Hearsay from 19th Regt stragglers).
21st Regt - 0500 hrs, made an all out attack on Hill 449 1 km SE TABU-DONG. Attack repulsed by superior UN fire power. Regt retired to ridgeline 1.7 km S TABU-DONG, and prepared defensive positions along the ridgeline.
23rd Regt - Disposition unknown.
Remarks: No tanks in this area. Disposition of artillery pieces unknown.

Intentions:
Following information learned from conversation among troops of 23rd Regt Hq on 3 Sep 50:
An order was received from higher headquarters, that TAEGU must be taken at all costs by 6 Sep 50. In addition, the first unit to enter TAEGU, would receive national honors.

Supply Dump (Rice)
28 Aug 50 - Approx 100 bags of rice stored under a concrete bridge 3 km W of KWIMI. 12 NKPA guards observed under bridge. Overheard guard's conversation, and learned that it was a 15th Div supply dump.

Ammo Dump
26 Aug 50 - Heard from a civilian, who was employed by the NKPA at an ammo dump, that one of three parallel RR tunnels (concrete reinforced) located 2 km SE of OKCH'ON (1050-1490) was utilized as an ammo dump. Tunnel approx 4 km long. Type of ammo unknown.

Trench Construction
27 Aug 50 - Observed freshly dug trenches on mountainsides midway between YONGDONG and HWANGGAN and just north of the YONGDONG-HWANGGAN highway. Heard from a civilian, who was employed by NKPA in trench construction, that extensive trench construction had just been started and that the mountain range in this area would probably be one of the NKPA’s strong points if and when it goes on the defensive.
