FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0749) 2 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Informant was a 1st Lt (Ser # 11943) and the 1st Bn S-3 in the SUDO GUARD HQS, 3RD REGT (ROK) at the outbreak of hostilities. PW’s unit moved to the front at HASURI on 25 Jun 50 where it was overrun by an enemy tank unit on 26 Jun 50. Unit was surrounded. PW then took command of a company acting as rear guard troops. PW and six others escaped the encirclement disguised as civilians and entered SEOUL 28 Jun 50.
Informant departed SEOUL 14 Jul 50 and, disguised as a student walked SOUTH, passing through SUWON, PYONGTAEK, CHONAN, KONGJU, TAEJON, SANGJU (here bought a travel permit for 10,000 won from People's Committee), KUMCHON, HYOPCHON, UIRYONG, SHINBAN, and crossed NAM River and reported to the US 2nd Div.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
Approx one Bn (engineer & infantry) quartered near the RR Station of YONGDON PO, 14 Jul 50.
Train was running between YONGDONG PO & SUWON during night of 14 Jul 50.
PW believes that the only NK Troops in SEOUL are cadre for training SK conscripts. Majority were stationed at YONGSAN sector of SEOUL 14 Jul 50.
Observed 24 Aug 50 NK Field Hospital occupying every building in YARO (耶魯) approx 300 patients wounded in battle crossing river SOUTH of HYOPCHON. Approx four (4) doctors and 30 nurses seen here. Village guarded by approx one (1) Rifle Co. Approx one (1) Rifle Co occupying HYOPCHON 24 Aug 50.
Approx 40 troops occupying SAMGA. Three (3) Security Force, JIANTAI (治安隊) also observed 24 August 1950.
HEARSAY: By 14 Jul 50, 60,000 South Koreans had been conscripted into the NKPA as UIYONGGUN (義勇軍) from SEOUL. 470,000 S Koreans hand been conscripted into NK Army from KYONGGI DO. Majority of these men were forced to join, but PW believes that approx 10% volunteered.
Observed 27 Aug 50 approx 500-600 men, outside of SAMGA. Observed two (2) 76 mm Guns in this area.
Observed what appeared to be a division headquarters 500 m E of NECHE RI (來斉里). Observed approx 60 signal troops and an SCR694 Radio manned by 3 men in this area.

c. Equipment:
29 Aug 50, 7 x T-34/85 and 5 x Trucks (Jap make) camouflaged with transplanted trees observed 1 km E of SHIN BAN-NI (新反里). One of the tanks was marked 275 or 274 on the side.

d. Personalities:
LEE, Song Yup (李氶燁) (리승엽)
Mayor of SEOUL. Believe to have come from N KOREA.

e. Morale:
It is believed that the morale of NKPA is low because of meager supply and hard fighting following the easy victories they have enjoyed until now.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammo Supply:
Ammunition and food were transported by S. Koreans age 17 to with "A" frame.
17 Aug 50, PW observed that a large food supply depot of the 15th Div was located in MODONG (牟東) in SANJU-GUN. Rice was stored in a warehouses in this village,

b. Bridges:
Underwater bridges (built with logs and sand bags) were built in the following places:
SOUTH of HYOPCHON (115-1402)
EAST of UIRYONG (1125 - 1373) over NAM River
SOUTH of SANG-NI (1125 - 1367.5) over NAM River

c. AMERICAN POW:
Sixty nine (69) American PsW were paraded around SEOUL with a banner reading, "American intervention is illegal". PsW were well guarded and people in the streets were cheering and clapping.

d. Ministry of Interior Troops:
Approx 500 Ministry of Interior Troops were believed to be in SEOUL 14 Jul 50. These troops were the same type of uniform as other troops but had a green stripe on the trouser. Troops were engaged in counter-intelligence and thought control.
Two or three Ministry of Interior troops were seen in each captured villages.

e. Special Intelligence:
PW suggest that air strikes should be aimed at small villages, ravines, and gullies where NK troops Hide during the day. No concentration of troops seen in large towns.
HEARSAY: It is reported that anti-communists are being sent to the USSR as forced labor and that all former ROK officers and police are being executed.
Ten (10) CCF Divs with aid North KOREA in the event that NK Army gets pushed back.
