1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and alert. Still suffering from an attack of influenza, but the information he offered was consistent.
Information appears to be fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Personal and Unit History:
Conscripted into the NKA 20 Nov 50 at HWANGJU (YC 4183).
Received no training and was sent directly to 7th Division which was located at KAPYONG (YB3298) 30 Nov 50. 200 recruits who had been conscripted with PW at HWANGJU were assigned to the 7th Div at the same time. From HWANGJU the 200 recruits marched for ten days under the direction of a Lt Col (no other guards) to KAPYONG. Upon arriving at KAPYONG, PW was assigned to the 2nd Regt, 2nd Bn, 1st Co, 1st Platoon.
Remained at KAPYONG until Dec 50. During this time issued a Japanese rifle (model 99) and 20 rounds of ammo. No uniforms issued. These recruits received no training.
Approximately 5,000 troops in the 7th Division at this time. Only about half had uniforms.
5 Dec 50, 7th Div began marching Southward and arrived at KANGWON DO, YONCHON (CT3218) o/a 1 Jan 51. During early Jan 51, while at YONCHON, about 3,000 troops were issued clothing, shoes, caps, and 200 rounds of ammo each.
7th Div remained near YONCHON for two days in a small village, during which time issue of clothing and ammo was conducted.
O/a 7 Feb 51, Division began to march Southward and passed near HANCH'ON (o/a 11 Feb 51), and arrived near CHUCH'ON-NI 20 Feb 51.
7th Div halted at approx 1¼ miles south of CHUCH'ON-NI.
PW claims that o/a 20 Feb 51, NK 20th Div was located SE of CHUCH'ON-NI (exact location unknown).
While PW company was in position, deserted and surrendered 23 Feb 51.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
2nd Bn of 7th Div was to defend the position at CHUCH'ON-NI against ROK attacks.

c. T/O & E and Strength:
V Corps: 7th (code - 805), 6th, and 12th Divisions.
7th Div: 1st Regt - code: 701; 2nd Regt - code: 702; and 3rd Regt - code: 703; Signal Battalion.
2nd Regt: 1st Bn - code: 531; 2nd Bn - code: 532; and 3rd Bn - code: 533; Mortar Platoon; Signal Platoon; and Medical Unit.
2nd Bn: 3 Rifle Companies, AT Platoon, HMG Platoon (an integral unit of the 2nd Bn), Medical Platoon.
1st Co: 3 Rifle Platoons, HMG Platoon.
1st Plat: 3 Rifle Squads.

  Twelve men were wounded during an air attack on 201400 I Feb 51 about 7 miles North of CHUCH'ON, before Bn took battle position.

While marching from YONCHON to CHUCH'ON-NI, troops, following orders from their commander, were exchanging their rifles for the Russian type rifles with wounded troops on their way to the rear. Reason for this was not known.
PW claims that this order applied to entire Division, and that the majority of the soldiers in Division succeeded in exchanging their rifles for the Russian type.
Approximately three days before Division arrived at CHUCH'ON (o/a 17 Feb 51), US rifles and carbines were taken away by order of the Co Commander and sent to unknown destination.

d. Personalities:

e. Signal:
Each Bn has one field phone (Russian make).
Each Regt has an unknown number of field phones.
Each Div has an unknown number of radios (Russian make).
On lower levels than Battalion, runners are used for communication.

f. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale is low because of the lack of food and winter clothing. Men in his Co are waiting for an opportunity to desert. More than half of the officers do not want to fight, and in the attack, they remain behind.
More than half of the men in the PW company were recruits who had not received any training.

g. Medical:
Prevalent disease in the Bn was influenza. (Approx 70 men were sick in the 2nd Bn.)
No immunization against influenza was taken.
No one had any frozen feet in 2nd Battalion.

h. Psychological Warfare:
PW surrendered voluntarily because of his poor physical condition. Hates communism and waited for an opportunity to surrender.
Saw UN leaflets many times while marching. From the leaflets he read, PW remembers, that they said: "CCF are eating your own rice." "They never fight for Korean people." "What are you fighting for?" "Escape from your units and surrender to us".
One side of the leaflet was written in the Korean language and the other in Chinese.
After reading the leaflet, made up his mind to desert his unit.
Did not hear other soldiers discussing the leaflet.
