FIELD REPORT (EXTRACT OF ADVATIS SPECIAL REPORT 031) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability, fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
There are three square signal flags - red or white and a red and white combination.

b. Variations:
These flags are used from Co level down and there are no variations in either the type or the use of the flags.

c. Special Training:
Observed the following method of flag used during attack training at KALYUAN (開原) MANCHURIA in Sep 50.
1st Plat - attacks when any colored flag is waved above the head of the signalman.
2nd Plat - attacks when flag is held straight up above the head of the signalman.
3rd Plat - attacks when flag is held to the side.
Only the asst plat ldr and above received training for about one month at Div Hq.

d. Manuals:
There are manuals on systems of signal flag communication which company commanders and above have, but he has never seen the contents of these manuals.

e. Other Equipment:
Very pistols which shoot red, white or blue flares; bugles are also used. One each to a company. In a battalion, telephones are used, while in a Regt, wireless telephones or field phones are used.

f. Use of Flags at Night:
Flags are not used at night, but very pistols and bugles are used. Does not know what the flares signify.

g. Standardization of System:
Signals differ between CCF armies, though their usage is the same.

h. Personnel Handling Flags:
The persons signaling with flags are the Co CO, Plat Ldr or the Asst Plat Ldr. The Co is located approx 200m from the vicinity of the signalman.

i. System:
This system of signal flag communication is not used to deceive or confuse the enemy forces. However, if it appears that the enemy forces know the signals, a bugle is used instead.
