FIELD REPORT (Extract of ADVATIS Special Report 030) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Signal Flags:
Color: Red and white. No designs.
Flag is sewed on to pole, approx 1.5cm diameter.
Description: Same as above.

b. Use of Flags:
The above described signal flags are used in NKA 4th Div. Uses of signal flags in each Bn within the same Div varied. For instance, for the signal of “Charge”.
1st Bn, 16th Regt, 4th Div:
Waved red and white rectangular flags alternately up from shoulder high front down to seam of trousers.
2nd Bn, 16th Regt, 4th Div:
Held four flags (one red rectangular, one white rectangular, one red triangular and one white triangular) with the right hand and circled them above the head.
3rd Bn, 16th Regt, 4th Div:
Four flags are tied together in the direction of charge, then follows a blast of a whistle (2 - 3 seconds) and short blasts. (ED.N.: The flags tied together might be an explanation for the term “ROPES OF WHITE FLAGS”.)

c. Training of Personnel:
PW learned signalling with flags for about a month in Feb 50 at the NCO School in the training Bn stationed at CHIYULRI (지율리), KOREA.

d. Meaning of Signals: (as used in Mortar Co, 2 Bn, 2 Regt, 7 Div NKA)
Advance: Wave red rectangular flag up and down in the direction of advance.
Retreat: Raise white rectangular flag straight up in the air.
Charge:
held over head.
Assemble: Red triangular flag straight up.
Creep and Crawl:
held over head.
Disperse: White triangular flag up and down.

e. Manuals:
Observed one notebook-like manual; yellow cover 15cm x 13cm 5 pages. This manual was used at the NCO School.

f. Standardization of System:
Did not know whether or not this flag system was standardized in all areas.

g. Personnel Handling Flags:
Plat leader waves the flag in the Plat, however, Pvt, (messenger) waves the flag in Co and Bn levels.
