PW NUMBER: 63 NK 700289
RANK: Pvt (戰士)
AGE: 21
DUTY: Rifleman
UNIT: CCF 4th Field Army, 40th Army, 119th Div, Guard Co, 1st Plat, 2nd Sqd
INTERROGATOR: SFC LEONG (ATIS)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - Fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
Only red or white flags are used by the CCF. These flags are made of cloth. The size of these flags is approx 14 inches X 18 inches, tied on to wooden sticks 1 inch in diameter and 22 inches in length, with an allowance of 6 inches on one end to be used as a handle. All flags are the same size. They are used by units of battalion level on up.

b. Standardization of System:
No set rules are made in governing the use of flag signals. Improvised signals are used. They change often. For example, if one division is designated to launch an attack, the method of flag signaling would be decided by the divisional headquarters, and the lower level would comply with such set method during this particular attack until instruction is received from the division headquarters of a change.

c. Use of Flags:
Flag signaling is so simple that any ordinary signal man may be used to handle the signaling. Flags used to give the order of attack, halt, commence firing, cease firing, retreat, advance to left, advance to right, and pursue, etc.

d. Manuals:
It is known to the PW that a flag signal manual is studied by all signal unit personnel. This manual contains some basic methods of flag signaling. Unable to give a more detailed description of this manual since he has never seen one.

e. Other Equipment:
Flares are known to be used for signaling at night. These flares come in four colors, white, red, green and yellow. Like the signal flags, the system of using these flares changes.

f. Use of Flags at Night:
Signal flags are not used at night.

g. Standardization of System:
The system of signaling varies in different command areas.

h. Personnel Handling Flags:
The signal flags are usually handled by a signal man who has some basic training on signaling. This signal man usually stands at an approx distance of from 100 yards to 200 yards from the unit commander whose rank should be at least a company commander.

i. Remarks:
He has only seen these flag and flare signals used in CHINA. He has no knowledge of these signals used in KOREA. He was captured on the 8th day after his arrival in KOREA.

For the Commanding Officer:
