FIELD REPORT (EXTRACT OF ADVATIS SPECIAL REPORT 031) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
Flags were red or white. Size of flags varies. Some were about 15 inches x 24 inches, others were smaller. Flags were attached to staffs about 21 inches to 24 inches in length. No design on flags.

b. Use of Flags:
The company commander, located at the base of the “V” of platoon, does all the signalling. Red flag is held in the right hand. By extending the right arm 90° angle from the body and then alternately flexing it back and forth across the chest, the first platoon is notified to advance. Again, using the red flag, dropping the right arm from shoulder level down parallel to the body, the 2nd platoon is ordered to advance. The red and white flags, criss-crossed in front of the body, means “pull back.” All signalling varies from time to time.

c. Special Training:
No special training for signal flag personnel.

d. Other Equipment: Whistle;
During night operations the whistle is used as follows for unit identification:
When a unit is uncertain as to another units position in the immediate area, one long blast on the whistle is given.
The response should be a long and a short blast. Otherwise, the responding unit would be considered as hostile.
60 mm Mortars:
One red flare means enemy retreating.
Three red flares signifies battalion artillery to “mass fire.”
One white flare for artillery battery to “lift fire.”
Three white flares indicates objective taken and battalion artillery to advance to new position.

e. Signal Pistol:
One red flare means objective taken.
Two red flares signify enemy retreating, press attack.
One green flare means to “mass fire.”
The green flares to “cease fire.”
Three green flares to “pull back.”

f. Use of Flags at Night:
Used only during day operations.

g. Standardization of System:
The signal flag system is not standardized, other than the continued use of red and white colors. Prior to moving out, the company commander decides upon the system to be used. The system differs from company to company.

h. Personnel Handling Flags:
The Company commander or assistant company commander does the signalling. At times, the company commander designates one of his messengers to execute signals. The signalman is usually located in the immediate vicinity of the company CP.
