FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1609) 27 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHIANG, Li Hsien (蔣立顯) (CCF)
RANK: Pvt (戰士)
ORGN: 42nd Army, 125th Div, Litter-Bearer Bn (担架大隊), 1st Co, 2nd Plat, 5th Section.
DUTIES: Litter-Bearer
EDUCATION: None
AGE: 35
OCCUPATION: Farmer

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative; but information is very limited because PW Bn (Litter-bearer) only recently joined the 125th Div in KOREA.
PW was suffering from frozen feet and seemed very nervous.
The information is believed to be fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW inducted 10 Nov 50 into the Litter-Bearer Bn at SUNGCHIANG SHENG(松江省).
A group of civilians were conscripted at SUNGCHIANG SHENG and organized into 7 sections. Later this Litter-Bearer Bn had 10 sections.
The Litter-Bearer Bn, travelling independently, departed SUNGCHIANG SHENG by train and arrived CHIAN (輯安) in Nov 50.
From CHIAN crossed the YALU River and entered KOREA via MANP’OJIN.
After travelling for approx 1 month, joined the 125th Div at CHAERYONG (YC2953).
From CHAERYONG, travelled southward, arriving at unknown location 14 Feb 51.
When the Bn was attacked by UN Forces, PW was left behind by the Bn because of his frozen feet. He was captured by ROK troops on 20 Feb 51.

b. T/O & E and Strength:
42nd Army: 125th Div was the only division which PW knew.
125th Div: Litter-Bearer Bn and other units.
Litter-Bearer Bn: 2 Litter Co.
1st Co: 3 Litter-Bearer Plat.
2nd Plat: 10 Litter-Bearer sections.
Each Litter-Bearer section consisted of 6 men.

PW stated that with the exception of officers, the Litter-Bearer Bn consisted of untrained troops.

NA, Chih Sen (那治森), Bn CO, Litter-Bearer Bn, 125th Div, 42nd Army.

d. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food was sufficient. PW ate 3 meals per day.
Source of food supply was unknown.

e. Signal:
Runners were used between PW Bn and Regt Hq.

f. Morale & Battle Effectiveness:
The morale of PW Bn was low due to the lack of training and battle fatigue.

g. Medical:
No disease case was noted in PW Bn.
No Immunizations.
Approx 30 out of 270 troops of the PW Bn were suffering from frostbite and frozen feet. These patients had never been treated.

h. Psychological Warfare:
PW was captured while hiding in a house because he could not walk.
He had not seen leaflets.
