FIELD REPORT (EXTRACT OF ADVATIS SPECIAL REPORT 031) 23 February 1951

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
Size: Approx 20 inches by 20 inches.
Color: Plain red or plain white.
Design: None

b. Personnel Handling Flags:
Each company equipped with two signal flags, one red and one white, normally carried by one of the messengers. Usually used by company commander, deputy company commander, political instructor, or assistant political instructor, to direct an assault unit. Platoon leaders use flags when a platoon goes out as an independent assault unit.

c. Use of Flags:
The flag signals represent certain purpose set by unit leader before the unit goes out. Then the company commander directs a unit he will inform the troops how he will wave the flag. Usually the signals used are simple in order that all the soldiers may easily recognize them. If he wishes the unit to move up, or stop, or retreat, he will wave the flag or flags in a certain way. Usually the company commander is close enough to the assault company, so that the flag signals can be seen clearly.

d. Special Training:
PW did not know what specific training the signal men were given in flag communication.

e. Use of Flags at Night:
Flag signals were not used at night.
Remarks:
When a unit is preparing for an assault, the political instructor would gather the troops to give instructions about different signals to be used - bugle signal, whistle signal, and flag signal. However, flag signals have not been widely used, because most assaults are conducted at night. Did not know about flag signals used at battalion levels or above.
