2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - Good

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
The size of the signal flag was 20cm x 30cm. Red, sky blue and white flags were utilized; no designs on flags.

b. Variations:
All units utilized the same type of flags.

c. Use of Flags:
Signal flags were mainly used within a Bn or lower echelon unit. Flags were used for communicating at close range and only when other means of communication were not available.

d. Special Training:
Special training in receiving and sending by radio, telephone signal flags were received by signal personnel. Only men with 2 yr middle school education or better were admitted to the signal school.

e. Manuals:
No manuals or sets of regulations were used to cover the system of signal flag communications. The unit commander usually designated use and meaning of colored flags. These designs were changed frequently, and therefore, communication by signal flags with other units was unfeasible.

f. Other Equipment:
Rifles and headgear were utilized for communication purpose when signal flags were not available.

g. Use of Flags at Night:
Signal flags were not utilized at night since no provision was made to facilitate the seeing of the flag during darkness.

h. Rope of White Flags:
Term “Rope of White Flags” is unknown.

i. Personnel Handling Flags:
The platoon leader or the signal man attached to the headquarters waves the flag. The presence of a flag wave usually indicates that a commander or a command post is in the immediate vicinity.

j. Deception:
Signal flag communication may be used for the purpose of deceiving or confusing the enemy forces, however, PW company did not attempt such tactics.
