2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative; PW seemed to be in good physical condition.
Considerable knowledge about his unit but knew very little about the technical details pertaining to the wireless equipment in his unit.
Information is fairly complete and appears to be reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Personal and Unit History:
PW was conscripted into the 2nd Regt, 38th NKA Div, 12 Sep 50 at SADONG (YD 4422). There, received 1 month of basic training.
Departed from SADONG 17 Oct 50 with 15 other retreating NKA soldiers and marched over mountain trails via the following places:

Upon arriving at KANGGYE, PW and 15 other EM with him observed an estimated 2,000 CCF soldiers marching southward through KANGGYE. Therefore PW and 15 EM departed from KANGGYE 22 Nov 50, marched over mountain trails, and arrived at HWACH’ON (CT8717) 3 Jan 51. There, assigned to 2nd Plat, Communications Liaison Unit, Guerrilla Bureau, II NKA Corps by order of the Commanding Officer, Guerrilla Bureau. Given the job of helping carry apparatus for a wireless set.
Departed from HWACH’ON 8 Jan 51 with the 2nd Communications Liaison Plat, marched (at night only) over roads adjacent to main highways, and arrived at HONGCH’ON (DS 0372) o/a 15 Jan 51.

22 Feb 51, 2nd Communications Liaison Plat departed for the II Corps Hq which was at SANGANMI-RI. However, PW and one other EM was carrying 4 batteries, dropped behind their unit 22 Feb 51 because too tired to continue walking.
23 Feb 51, continued walking with intentions of rejoining the 2nd Communications Liaison Plat at SANGANMI一RI. Upon arriving at SANGANMI-RI during the night of 23 Feb 51, unable to locate their unit. Therefore, they passed the night of 23 Feb 51 by sleeping in a Korean farmer’s house. Intended to continue searching for their unit after dark 24 Feb 51, but elements of the US 32nd RCT entered SANGANMI-RI at 241700 I Feb 51. PW and the other EM were captured by the 32nd RCT troops.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
As of 22 Feb 51, the mission of the 2nd Plat, Communications Liaison Unit, II Corps was to deliver 1 wireless set plus accessories to SONGNI-SAN (CR9845) to a guerrilla unit located there, called the “PALCHI-SAN 2nd Branch Unit.” Wireless operator of the 2nd Communications Plat was to remain with the “PALCHI-SAN 2nd Branch Unit” guerrillas and maintain wireless contact with the II Corps’ Guerrilla Bureau. Upon leaving the wireless set and operator at the “PALCHI-SAN 2nd Branch Unit”, 2nd Communications Plat was to return to the II Corps Hq. Location of II Corps Hq would be obtained prior to the departure from the “PALCHI-SAN 2nd Branch Unit” by wireless contact with the Central Liaison Unit, Guerrilla Bureau, II Corps.
O/a 8 Jan 51, all 6 Plat of Communications Liaison Unit left II Corps Hq at HWACH’ON to go to six different areas and deliver wireless sets to the 6 “PALCHI-SAN Branch Units” subordinate to II NKA Corps. 2nd Communications Liaison Plat was to deliver a wireless set to the “PALCHI-SAN 2nd Branch Unit” at SUNGNI-SAN; 3rd Communications Liaison Plat was to deliver a set to the “PALCHI-SAN 3rd Branch Unit” which was in the general vicinity of HOENGSONG; 5th Communications Plat was to deliver a set to the "PALCHI-SAN 5th Branch Unit" in the general vicinity of P’YONGCH’ANG.
As of 22 Feb 51, II Corps Hq was located at SANGGANMI-RI.
As of 16 Feb 51, II NKA Corps Hq had approx 40 CCF soldiers attached. PW observed this estimated CCF plat at the II Corps Hq which was at TASU-RI at the time. No other information on the CCF.

II NKA Corps: 2nd, 6th, 9th and 10th Div, Guerrilla Bureau, Guard Plat, Political Bureau, C/S Bureau, Operations Bureau, Communications Bureau, Rear Echelon Bureau and 6 Guerrilla Units (1st, 2nd. 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th “PALCHI-SAN” (Partisan) Branch Units.)
Guerrilla Bureau: Central Liaison Unit (details unknown to PW) plus Communications Liaison Unit.
Communications Liaison Unit (code: CHINTAL LAE): 6 Communications Liaison Plat
2nd Communications Liaison Plat: Plat supposed to have a total of 18 men.

Losses in personnel and equipment were a result of 2 EM dropping out of the platoon because they fell ill with typhus fever between 11 and 16 Feb 51, and as a result of PW being captured with one other EM on 24 Feb 51.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Personnel of 2nd Plat, Communications Liaison Unit, II Corps ate three meals daily. Rations were confiscated from villagers. Frequently, 2nd Plat ate in villages. In such cases the meals were prepared by the villagers.

f. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale of the men in 2nd Plat, Communications liaison Unit, II Corps, was low because several of the men were too old (over 40 yr) to stand the rigors of war, and several of the men were too young (under 17 yr). Furthermore, the men were unable to obtain medical aid for their ills (2 men contracted typhus fever). Most of the men were so fatigued that they could not march more than 12 km per night.

g. UN PW:
From time to time PW saw a couple of captured ROKA soldiers being used as laborers for the II NKA Corps Hq when it was at HWACH’ON during the early part of Jan 51.
O/a 17 Feb 51, PW saw an unidentified NKA plat marching south through TASU-RI. Platoon had 2 captured ROKA soldiers carrying ammo for it.

h. Medical:
Two EM of 2nd Plat, Communications Liaison Unit, II Corps, were abandoned by the NKA when they fell ill between 11 Feb 51 and 16 Feb 51.
No immunizations have been given to II NKA Corps personnel to the best of PW knowledge.
There were no frostbite or frozen feet cases in the PW Communications Liaison Unit.

i. Psychological Warfare:
Did not surrender voluntarily. He became separated from his unit and was captured while searching for it.
PW had not seen any leaflets.
