FIELD REPORT (EXTRACT OF ADVATIS SPECIAL REPORT 031) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - Fair

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
Two signal flags, one red and one white. Size about 15" x 15". No designs on flags. Staff is about 22 to 25 inches in length.

b. Use of Flags:
The order for the use and method of signal flags comes from Div Hq. System of signalling changes with every battle for security reasons.
Unit used the following method of signalling with signal flags.
Advance: The red flag brought up and pointed forward with the right arm parallel to the ground.
Attack and Commence Firing: The red flag waved overhead with the right arm in a complete circle.
Pull Back: The white flag waved overhead with the left arm in a complete circle.

c. Change in System:
The system of signalling with the red and white flags varies from time to time. The order to change the system comes from Div Hq.

d. Other Equipment:
Flashlights with red lenses are used for communication. The following code is employed:
One flash - unit identification.
Two flashes - advance.
Three flashes - attack.
Two long and a short - disengage or stop.
Two long and two short - pull back or retreat.
Whistles are also used. Code used is the same as the flashlight system.
Platoon leaders signal by clapping hands when in close combat at night. Code employed:
Clapping once - identification.
Clapping twice - advance.
Clapping 3 times - attack.
Clapping 4 times - stop.
Clapping 5 times - retreat.
White towel tied around the left arm was used for unit identification at night.

e. Standardization of System:
Within a Div, system is standardized. Order as to method used for signalling sent from Div Hq to lower levels.

f. Personnel Handling Flags:
Co CO or Asst Co CO waves flags. The flag waver’s location is in the immediate vicinity of the Co CP.
