2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - Fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
Signal flags red and white approx 30 cm sq, were used by PW unit, an anti-tank Bn, on vehicle convoy marches.

b. Use of Flags:
The white flag was used to signify curves while enroute by holding it out of which ever side the curves or turns were. The red flag when held above the head signified complete stop. Red flags were always held in the right hand and white flags were always held in the left hand. When the flags were crossed in any position, it was an air raid warning.

c. Personnel Handing Flags:
The flag signalling was done chiefly by the rifle squad leader riding on the vehicle, however, the signalling could be done by anyone aboard the vehicle.

d. Special Training:
The flag signalling personnel weren’t specially trained. The system was improvised by the unit CO for convenience during convoy marches.

e. Other Equipment:
Communications equipment used were: LUM (?) radio transmitter and receiver, ASEMA (phonetic) short range radio telephone.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - Good.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
The Inf Unit of the 104th Ind Coastal Defense Unit used solid red and dark blue and white flags for communication. (Blue and white flags were used interchangeably). Size was 30 cm x 60 cm. No designs. Only two flags used at one time (red and white or red and blue).

b. Use of Flags:
Red and dark blue flags were used between the Co Plat and Sqd. The signals were changed each day by the commanding officer. There were signals for advance, charge, assembly, etc.

c. Other Equipment:
Telephone, wireless and rifle fire.

d. Personnel Handling Flags:
The flags were used by the Co CO and the Plat Ldr. It, therefore, indicates that the commander is in the vicinity.
