FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1599) 24 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: LU, Kai Ho (盧閨和) (CCF)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but names of places travelled and dates were very confusing.
Report seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted into the CNA, 60th Army in Nov 42 at YUNAN SHENG (雲南省).
Received 5 months of infantry training at KAI YUAN (開原) and MENG TZU (蒙自).
CNA 60th Army surrendered to the CCF Dec 49 at CHILIN SHENG, CHANG CH’UN SHIH (吉林省 長春市). Received one month of infantry training and indoctrination at CHILIN SHENG, CHIU TAI HSIEN (吉林省 九台縣) with the CCF.
CNA 60th Army was redesignated as CCF 50th Army Jan 50 at CHILIN SHENG, CHIUTAI HSIEN. The same weapons used in the CNA were utilized by the defeated troops. Individual Div, Regt, Bn, Co, Plat, and Sqd were unaltered in respect to organization except that at each echelon, political officers were placed from the CCF.
PW was the Platoon Leader of 1st Plat, 2nd Co, 1st Bn, 450th Regt, 150th Div, 50th Army.
50th Army left CHILIN SHENG, CHIUTAI HSIEN Feb 50 on foot arriving at HUPEI SHENG, (湖北省) Feb 50.
Received 3 months of communist indoctrination.
Left HUPEI SHENG Jul 50 on foot arriving at HUPEI SHENG, TANYANG HSIEN (湖北省 丹陽縣) Jul 50.
Left HUPEI SHENG, TANYANG HSIEN on foot Aug 50 and arrived at ANTUNG SHENG, HAI LUNG HSIEN (安東省 海龍縣) Sep 50. Received approx 1 month of air defense training (digging foxholes and camouflaging one’s self), and indoctrination.
Left ANTUNG SHENG, HAILUNG HSIEN by train Nov 50 and arrived at ANTUNG (安東) Nov 50.
Left ANTUNG on foot, crossed the YALU River Nov 50, and arrived at ANJU (YD 2989) 18 Nov 50 traveling only at nights.
Places travelled between ANTUNG and ANJU were unknown. Remained at ANJU for 14 days to defend the city in the event that UN paratroops landed there.
Left ANJU (YD 2989) on foot 4 Dec 50 and arrived at SUWON Jan 51 (after by-passing P’YONGYANG, and passing through SEOUL Jan 51). Retreated from SUWON (CS 5256) on foot Jan 51 and arrived at the place of capture (CS 4553) Feb 51.
Captured 20 Feb 51 by the 24th RCT.

b. Location and Activities of Unit:
Heard 38th Army was South of the HAN River but it became disorganized and elements were heading Northward.
Heard 40th and 39th Armies were North of the HAN River.
17 Feb 51, received instructions from the Company CO that in the event of disorganization, they were to retreat and gather at the 50th Army Hq Area located 1 Km East of South Gate SEOUL.
Captured while defending the bridge over the HAN River. According to PW superiors, 50th Army was supposed to remain at its position resting, awaiting reinforcements. However, the PW did not believe it can be done since UN forces were advancing.

50th Army: 148th, 149th, 150th Infantry Divisions, Mt Gun Bn, Guard Bn, Sig Bn, Political Section.
150th Div: 147th, 148th, 450th Infantry Regiments, Guard Go, 2 x 82mm mortar Co, Inf Gun Co, Sig Co, Med Unit.
450th Regt: 3 Infantry Battalions, Sig Plat, Litter-Bearer Plat, Med Unit, Guard Co.
1st Bn: 3 Inf Co, HMG Co, Sig Sqd.
2nd Co: 3 Rifle Plat, Sig Personnel (3), Mess Squad (7 men).
1st Plat: 3 Rifle Sqd
Only one Army Group in KOREA, the 13th, which was in the 3rd Field Army.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Clained that PW platoon received 1,150 rifle rounds and 35 grenades at the place of capture Feb 51. Heard ammo was transported by trucks from his company.
Food was confiscated from farm villages.

f. Signal:
Company and Battalion: Runners
Battalion, Regiment and above: Telephones
Bugles were utilized in attacks and assembly.
Very pistols were used in attacks and retreats, colours were green, red and white. Significance of colors changed often.

g. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale was low because of long march with little rest, and lack of food and clothing.

h. UN PW:
Saw two US PW near P’YONGYANG Dec 50. They were walking north with CCF guards.

i. Medical:
Two cases of Malaria and four cases of frost bitten feet in PW plat.
No immunization received since they entered KOREA. A jelly-like medicine was applied to frost bitten feet. However, it did not do any good.

j. Psychological Warfare:
Surrendered voluntarily because PW hated communism. Saw leaflets at various places; also heard jeep broadcasts. The broadcast and leaflets stated ”Why fight for the Russians, in KOREA? US and CHIANG Kai Shek are friends. If you surrender, we will provide you with warm clothing and food and will send you back to your homes”.
PW believed the leaflets and broadcasts, so he surrendered.
PW believed others felt the same way.
