2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability, fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
FIG “A”
Color:
Red or white.
Material:
Calico, called YANGPU (洋布) in Chinese and bamboo pole, about 10 mm in diameter for hand.
Designs:
No designs on the flags.

b. Use of the Flags:
The use of flag was not uniform. The signal system was subject to change according to unit commander’s order. The following flag system was adopted by PW company:
(1) Bring red flag up and down in front of signal man was the signal to advance to a unit in front of the signal man.

(2) Bringing red flag back to front, up and down, meant advance to a unit to the rear of the signalman.

(3) Waving red flag side to side, left and right, signals “capture of objective.”
(Fig - D)
(4) Putting up red flag vertically in the air and keeping that position for an interval was identification of company headquarters.
(5) Holding a white flag vertically over head and waving it up and down was “cease fire” order.
(Fig - E)
(6) Extending flag horizontally toward the enemy lines and moving flag to and from body, was signal indicating presence of enemy in the direction pointed.

(7) Bringing white flag up and down in front of the body was the signal to “open fire”.

(8) Holding a white flag straight forward and parallel to the ground and moving it in quick manner horizontally side to side was signal for movement of unit.
(9) Waving red and white flags sideways, crossing and criss-crossing, overhead was signal for the units located on left and right flanks to commence assault simultaneously.
However, the above mentioned flag system was subject to change by the Co CO’s order, according to tactical situation.
There was no flag system used on Bn level and up.

c. Other Equipment:
Communication between headquarters was conducted by other means, i.e. runners and field phones when available.

d. Personnel Handling Flags:
There was one set of flags - red and white, carried by a signalman.
The size was not uniform but approx the same.

e. Standardization of System:
The flag system was used only by company and its use controlled by the Co CO. Every company has different system. In most cases, the flag signal was given by company commander or whoever was in command of the company. However, a signalman, who was young, alert, also gave flag signal upon order of the company commander.

f. Special training:
A signalman did not have special training for flag communication except a short orientation on the use of flag.
