FIELD REPORT (Extract of ADVATIS Special Report 030) 23 February 1951

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - Fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description:
Material: Wide woof (廣木) cotton cloth. Pine pole (3cm diameter). Cloth tied to the pole at top and bottom, so flags look something like
Cloth is about 1mm thick. Color: Red, white, blue and yellow. No design.
Material: Same as above.
Color: White and red.
No design.

b. Use of Flags:
The flags were used at the Bn level in the NKA. Had no knowledge of signal flags used at other unit levels. PW, however, believed that same type of flags used at the Regt level because he took training (only telephone training; not signal flag training) at a Regt where same flags were used as in the Bn level. Flags are only used in time of emergency. Retreat normally signalled by flags instead given by phones. Heard from a signal instructor that a large flag is planted in the troop area when friendly planes fly over. This system is said to be for the identification of friendly troops or whether or not bombardment is required.

c. Use of Flags at Night:
Heard from a NK signal instructor many times in Sep 50 that flags are not used at night.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability - Fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
There was no flag signal communication for the Telephone Co of the 573rd Unit, however, in Inf units there were flags used among the platoons, companies and squads.

a. Description of Flags:
These cotton flags were red and white flags each measuring approx 30cm x 30cm with a wooden handle.

b. Personnel Handling Flags:
Usually, flags were carried by squad and platoon leaders and company runners.

c. Standardization:
This flag signals were not standardized and was designated usually by platoon leaders. Consequently, each platoon had its own way of signalling. This, however, did not confuse the other platoons due to the distance between each platoon. When greater operation was necessary, company commander designated the signal but varied it in each operation. Flags weren’t used at night.
