FIELD REPORT (EXTRACT OF ADVATIS SPECIAL REPORT 031) 23 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability; fair.

3. SIGNAL FLAGS:
a. Description of Flags:
PW stated that his company was equipped with two different colored flags. The description of the flags is as follows:
Size: 17″ in length and 11″ in width, both flags were of the same size.
Color: Plain white or plain red.
Design: None on flags.
No special poles were used as a flag pole. Long sticks and branches used.

b. Variation:
The 2nd Bn Hq and the headquarters of the companies had two signal flags (white and red), and all plat in the companies had one white flag. The flags of identical size and color were used up to the Bn level. The red and white flags were raised by the Co CO, over his head when he decided to attack. A different signal was given to each plat when attacking. The two flags were always used even though the signals were changed. The flag signals were always changed by the Co CO, therefore, the changes were given to each Plat Ldr before the attack.

c. Use of Flags:
The flags were used for general signaling purposes.
The white flag was used by the plat ldr of the leading plat when the entire company was on a move. The white flag was pointed out arms length by the leading plat ldr. When approaching a town, the flag was pointed toward the town.

d. Special Training:
Three men in communication section went to the regimental hq to take communication training for approx one week, type of training undertaken was unknown.

e. Other Equipment:
Company was equipped with the signal flags and one signal flare gun. (Three rounds of flare, red, blue and yellow.) A telephone was installed between the regiment and the battalion hq.

f. Use of Flags at Night:
Flags were not used during the night. Did not observe the flare gun used at night.

g. Personnel Handling Flags:
The company commander would use the flags from his command post which was located approx 30 m behind the plat.
