1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW complained about the treatment that he is receiving as a PW. Information seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
PW was conscripted into the NK Police Constabulary OCS during Dec 46 at HOERYONG (EB6298). Police Constabulary OCS was not actually an officer candidate school but was a front name for the NKA. Received 7 months of basic training at HOERYONG. During May 47, the Police Constabulary OCS was redesignated as the Peoples Army (NK). Assigned to the 4th Regt, 2nd NKA Div. During Jun 47, promoted to Sgt.
Departed HOERYONG during Mar 49 with 1st Bn, 4th Regt, 2nd Div, by train, and arrived HAMHUNG (CV7517) during Mar 49. There, received advanced training for four months.
Departed HAMHUNG during Jul 49 with approx 80 other NCO from the 4th Regt, 2nd Div, by train, and arrived P’YONGYANG (YD3822) during Jul 49. There, PW and 80 other men from the 4th Regt, 2nd Div were assigned immediately to #2 Officers Academy (OCS). Received 9 months training in Communist Ideology, Communist History, Communist Principles of Economics, Map Reading, and Korean History. He graduated with approx 160 others during May 50. All graduates were commissioned Lt and assigned duties as Cultural (Political) officers in the NKA.
Departed P’YONGYANG 21 May 50, by train, and arrived SUKCHON (YD2566) 21 May 50, and assigned to the 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 29th Regt, 10th Div.
Departed SUKCHON during Jun 50 with 10th Div, marched, and arrived P’YONGYANG during Jun 50.

Departed HYONPUNG during Sep 50 with the retreating remnants of 10th Div. Marched through the TAEBAEK Mountain Range, and arrived SUIM MYON (DT0741) during Nov 50. There, 10th Div, regrouped but did not receive replacements, additional weapons, or ammunition.

At KAPYONG, a rifle bullet grazed his right eye. He departed KAPYONG 24 Nov 50 with 10 other wounded soldiers of 29th Regt, 10th Div, by truck, and traveled via:

At the above village PW was accepted as a patient in the 10th Division’s Med Bn. Med Bn utilized approx 15 Korean houses and each house had an average of seven patients.
Departed the above village o/a 24 Dec 50, and marched with 10th Division’s Med Bn, over the TAEBAEK Mountain Range. Enroute south, the Med Bn, met the 10th Div, 2 Jan 51 and PW joined the 1st Co, 1st Bn, 29th Regt, 10 Div. Continued marching over the TAEBAEK Mountain Range over trails, and arrived with Division in the mountains approx 3 Km S of UISONG (DR7322) o/a 21 Jan 51. There, Division engaged in sporadic fire fights against UN Forces.
19 Feb 51, 1st Bn, 29th Regt marched north to attack ROK Police in the UISONG area. PW was wounded by rifle fire and dropped behind his unit. He was captured in a valley approx 2 Km S of UISONG.

29th Regt CP was located approx 24 Km NE of UISONG as of 19 Feb 51.

e. Replacements:
As of 19 Feb 51, the 10th Div had received no replacements.

f. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
10th Div personnel subsisted by confiscating food from Korean villagers.
As of 19 Feb 51, Div had received no weapons, ammunition, or other supplies.
Division had enough ammo on hand for two days in a major battle. Division was expecting no resupply.

g. Signal:
29th Regt has a number of field telephones.

h. Morale:
29th Regt personnel had low morale because they were fatigued, cold, and in constant fear of UN aircraft. Combat efficiency of the regiment was poor because the regiment was badly under-strength and under-equipped. Furthermore, most of the EM had lost the will to fight.

I. UN PW:
Observed 10 ROK PW o/a 10 Feb 51 at approx 3 Km S of UISONG. PW were not guarded, as they were to be incorporated into the 10th Div as replacements.

j. Medical:
Knew of no disease in the 10th Div other than a few cases of influenza. 10th Div personnel have not received any immunization for at least one year.
Approx 50% of 29th Regt, 10th Div are suffering from mild forms of frost bite. They received no treatment.

k. Psychological Warfare:
PW did not surrender voluntarily. He was captured after being wounded in a fire fight. He had not seen leaflets.
