Reliability, fair.
a. Description of Flags:
Shape as above. Colors dark red or white. Size, 40 cm x 40 cm. Material, cotton. Flag was tied to a pole 55 cm in length and 1.5 cm in diameter.
b. Use of Flags:
One red and one white flag kept at headquarters. Within the combat area, plat leaders also carried flags for communication with the CO. Any variations in the type and use of the flags at the various unit levels were unknown to PW.
Flag signals were used only for combat communication.
Flags carried by plat ldrs were used for communication with Co Hq, not for communication with his men.
c. Special Training:
No special training for flag communication. Regulations for flag communication were not standardized. Method or use was established between communicators for specific instances. No qualifications were required.
d. Manuals:
No manuals or sets of regulations for flag communication.
e. Other Equipment:
Co CO and up have binoculars, made in US or CHINA, in order to read flag communications. Communication was mainly by means of a buglar, or runner or telephone.
f. Use of Flags at Night:
Not used at night.
g. Standardization of System:
Not standardized. One officer of a unit always on look out for flag communication from higher commanders.
h. Ropes of White Flags:
“Ropes of White Flags” might mean a rope used for tying a flag to a rifle.
i. Personnel Handling Flags:
Commander or assistant commander designated the flag which was carried by a signal man. The presence of flag waving indicates the presence of commander or command post.
