FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0036) 24 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Subject was cooperative during phase of interrogation. He was captured alone, wearing army uniform. Info herein seems reliable.

3. LENGTH OF SERVICE:
23 July 50 till captured.

4. MILITARY HISTORY:
Inducted 23 July 50 at CHONG JIN (淸津) and received basic training for approx 30 days.
Attached to 111th Regt when tranaferred to SEOUL. Former Jap rifle, 50 rds of ammo and 2 hand grenades issued.
The 111th Regt moved to place unknown from SEOUL on 11 Sep 50 and only the 36th Bn of this 111th Regt remained. This 36th Bn was then engaged in the battle of YONGDONGPO.

5. FOREIGN ELEMENTS:
On 15 Sep 50 subject met and asked 2 men from the Chinese Communist Army, who were casualties, where they came from. They were Koreans and said they were from MANCHURIA, a place called DONG PUK (東北地方). They were promised riches for going to South KOREA.

6. WEAPONS & PERSONNEL:
36tb Bn - 600 men, armed with 6 Hvy Mach Guns, 8 LMT and rifles. The machine guns were old and of German make.
The present strength of the 36th Bn is estimated at 450 men. They are stationed at a place called “LIKKA” (梨花), a Girls’ Univ in SEOUL.

7. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
In the battle of YONGDONGPO, no food or ammo were issued.

8. MORALE:
The morale of the 36th Bn was low. They fought unwillingly and were continuously threatened by the officers.
The men ate 3 meals at SEOUL but as YONGDONGPO received only 1 meal per day.

9. US PsW: (Obs 3, 4 Sep 50)
When subject was standing in front of a Police Station in PYONGYANG (平壤) he observed approx 600 US PsW being heavily guarded and marched thru the city. They looked tired and hungry. No bed patients were observed. All PsW were civilian clothing.

10. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Medics were Red Cross band and when going into battle are armed.
