PW was cooperative but information limited due to his short service. Information believed reliable.
3. REMARKS:a. Chronology
PW was inducted 47th Regt on 16 Jul 50, at PYON YANG (平壤). Unit composed of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bns and special tank company. 1st and 2nd Bns 100 men each. 3rd Bn 200 men, 25 men in special company. Subject attended the tank training school in HEIJO (平壤), N Korea. One Russian officer at the school. Twenty days after he graduated on 5 Aug 50, subject was assigned to the 47th Tank Regt and moved to SUWON on 30 Aug 50. He was designated as CO of the independent light company of the 47th Regt.
Subject deserted from the unit on 21 Sep 50 because he did not want to fight. Fled to ANYANG NI and surrendered to an American unit on the same day.
b. Unit Organization and Strength
The 47th Regt consists of 3 tank Bns and 1 independent light tank company. The strength of the regiment is estimated as 500 officers and enlisted men. His company had only 25 enlisted men and 4 officers.
Subject observed no troops other than his unit in PYON YANG (平壤).
At the time source left his unit, the entire regt was stationed on a hill located approx l km north of SUWON city.
Subject stated that the entire Regt had only 5 medium tanks (T-34 Russian made) and one 2 1/2 ton truck (US made) with 400 men.
There was another unit of 1,000 men in SUWON.
The independent tank company has no tanks. Subject did not known what purpose or mission the special tank company was to perform. Every man had a Russian rifle (M1941 and M1942). 100 rounds of ammunition were issued to each individual soldier.
No other weapons or equipment. There were two telephones (field type) in the Regt command post, but they were not in use.
