ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1302　26 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0009)　22 September 1950

Subject was cooperative and talked freely. Information herein fairly reliable.

Inducted 4th Aug 50 at SUNCHAN. Received only 5 days of training due to heavy American bombardment. The 78th Regt hid in the mountainous area of SALIWAN for approx 28 days to avoid the air raids before moving in to SEOUL.

Strength of the 78th Regt was approx 2000 men. PW believes that majority were killed or captured.

Heard there was a large ammunition dump (cave) located immediately north of SEOUL. (outskirts) Also heard that a large amount of gasoline (in drums) was buried in this area. (These drums were buried on both sides of a dirt road leading up a mountain to a former Japanese Army antiaircraft gun position.)

PW observed 5 trucks hauling food and ammunition nightly, therefore he believes this was the major supply dump in the Seoul area. Heard there were 3-4 Russian officers assigned to each brigade or division level unit. Observed 3-4 Russian officers on a firing range while receiving training at SUNCHON. Recently read in a newspaper and was also told that the North Korean Army had already captured PUSAN and that SAISHU Island was the only South Korean occupied territory.

States that there are no well equipped or trained N. Korean troops near SEOUL. However, observed and also heard that a large number of Koreans residing in CHINA were being drafted into the N. Korean Army. Also heard from a truck driver (a month ago) that approx 30,000 to 40,000 of these troops had entered North Korean territory. Subject heard from a Korean (draftee from CHINA) that there were quite a few Chinese mixed in with other draftees. Subject also heard that the Chinese Communist Army would aid the N. Korean Army in the very near future. The men of the 3rd platoon were told by their leader that the Chinese Communist Army would be in the vicinity of SEOUL within 3-4 days.
