2. ASSESSMENT

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
13 Sep 49: Conscripted into CCF at MUKDEN, MANCHURIA and assigned to 120th Div.
Nov 50: 120th Div arr SINUIJU, NK. 4 days later obs 118th and 119th Div of 40th Army also assembled here.
Dec 50: 40th Army crossed 38th Parallel.
PW obs and talked to personnel of the 38 and 39th Armies who were also in the locale.
38 and 39th Armies engaged in battle in the vic of SEOUL. At that time 40th Army moved 15 km N of SEOUL for re-supply.
Individual received 60-100 rd of M-38 ammo, 4 hand-grenades, 1 pr rubber shoes with canvas top and 1 suit of underwear. Plat received 20 replacements from MANCHURIA; later PW obs his bn had 200 replacements.
10 Feb 51: 120th Div dep from point of resupply to vic of CHIPYONG.
359th Regt engaged UN Troops.
1st, 2d, and 3d Bn of 359th Regt deployed 200 meters apart. 2d Bn dispersed by arty fire. PW injured; hid in village.
17 Feb 51: Captured by X Corps Blue Boy.

120th Div: 358th, 359th, and 360th Regt, a bugle co (80 men) and a litter bn (400 men)
359th Regt: 1st, 2d, and 3d Bn. Also a supply section (70-80 men)
2nd Bn: 5th, 6th, 7th Rifle Co and a MG Co.
5th Co: 1st, 2d, and 3d Plat. Also a 60mm mortar Plat.
2nd Plat: 4th, 5th, and 6th Sqd.

To drive the US troops from KOREA.

g. Morale
Since CHINA had no right to send troops to KOREA, troops are bitter and have no respect for their superiors. They will desert at any opportune moment. They also fear the tremendous fire power of the UN.

h. Additional Info
1/3 of 2d Bn, 120th Div, are former members of CNA.
12 NKA attached to 2d Bn.
Night Bombing:
(1) PW was subjected to 4 night bombings.
(2) Last bombing 14 Feb 51 at 2000 hours.
(3) 5th Co suffered no casualties but 4th and 6th Co had 10 casualties.
(4) Bomb feared most: Napalm.
(5) Prior to bombing, soldiers turn their uniforms inside out and listen for 2 short blasts from plat ldr whistle before taking cover. After bombing, plat ldr gives the all-clear by blowing his whistle; one long and one short blast. Troops then rise and continue march.
(6) No adverse psychological effect.
(7) No counter-measure taken.
(8) Night strafing damaged about 1/3 of their ammo.
2d Bn suffered 10 KIA and 20 WIA.
(9) Flares hinder their (CCF) operations.
(10) Night arty fire is considered more effective than bombing and strafing.
