FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0268) 9 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Evaluation: Being a former ROK soldier, troops in his unit did not take him in confidence. No secrets were open to him and he was constantly guarded. He was not able to give information in detail. Info fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
a. Disposition
5 Mar 51 while the 2d Regt, 12th Div was preparing to retreat PW and two others (all former ROK) deserted with intentions of surrendering to UN Forces. After deserting they hid for three days in hills directly north of HAGUNGJONG-NI and surrendered voluntarily to B Co, 23d Regt when they took hill where he was hiding.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
O/a 28 Feb 51 the 2d Regt Hq of the NK 12th Div with an estimated strength of 180 men moved from village 3 km NE of HAMGOGAE (DS 250495) to HAGUNGJONG-NI (DS230494).
PW was with the medical plat and established aid station in the same village as 2d Regt Hq.
During the period 1 Mar 51-4 Mar 51 PW carried wounded brought in from the Bn to the 12th Div field hospital 2 km N of HAMGOGAE. Heard during this period that the NK 12th Div was near the field hospital.

b. Other units
1 Mar 51 heard from a soldier in his unit that the 6th Div was on their east flank and the 7th Div on their west flank.

c. Withdrawal
5 Mar 51 the 2d Regt Hq & medical plat were ordered to withdraw to village approx 4-5 Km north. PW deserted at this time and hid in hills north of HANGUNGJONG-NI for three days, until the UN Force entered village and he was able to surrender.

d. NK troops
While in hiding PW observed daily, NK troops in groups of 10-15 men each entering HAGUNGJONG-NI and heading NE in the direction of HAMGOGAE. He did not observe any CCF troops.

e. Weapons
Weapons: (2d Regt Hq & Med Plat). Troops had either Russian rifles (100 rd each) or PPSH SMG (rd 200 each)

f. Personnel
Three medical officers (doctors) in the medical plat were Chinese speaking Koreans (born in KOREA, reared in CHINA). Among the EM majority of the NCO were able to understand Chinese.

g. Clothing
Issued cotton padded winter uniform.

h. Food
Insufficient. Troops only fed when food could be confiscated from villages.

i. Physical condition
Fairly good.

j. Contagious disease.
None appeared among troops. No immunizations given

k. Morale
Appeared to be in high spirit. Troops have confidence of victory.

l. Gift packages
PW observed gift packages consisting of cigarettes, soap, thread, needle and candy from Hungary distributed among the medical personnel. Gift packages were received o/a 23 Feb 51 and given only to the NK troops. Captured ROK were left out.

m. 5th phase operation
27 Feb 51 PW heard from a soldier that the 5th Phase offensive was scheduled to start 1 Apr 51. In this offensive, tanks, airplanes, and artillery from RUSSIA were going to be used.
