Cooperative and observant. Information seems to be reliable.
Was a former ROK soldier captured by CCF unit 2 Jan 51 and turned over to NKA 6th Div.
Night of 12 Mar 51, while being used to dig a foxhole in vic of YUDONG-NI (DS2559), escaped. Travelled southwest until he was captured by UN troops at PODONG-NI (DS207548).
3 Mar 51, heard from political asst company CO that mission of 6th Div was to set up a defensive position vic of YUDONG-NI (DS2559) and to conduct a delaying action so as to give the rear units ample time to prepare for the 4th Phase Operation.
a. Organization & Disposition:
12 Mar 51, heard from NKA soldier that the 6th Div CP was approx 4 km N of YUDONG-NI (DS2559). Heard that elements of the 6th Div were the 657th, 659th, and 661th Regt, and they were deployed in the following manner: 657th Regt was dug in on small hills 1 km SW of YUDONG-NI (DS2559), and 659th or 661st Regt was 1 km SE of YUDONG-NI. The other regt was in vic W of the 657th Regt. Observed troops in the various localities mentioned and learned their identity by inquiring of the troops.
Part of 657th Regt was dug in so as to overlook the highway. One man foxholes, covered with pine branches, were dug on both N and S slopes of the hill. 657th Regt CP (camouflaged dugout) was approx 1½ km W of YUDONG-NI.
b. Strength:
There were approx 40 men per Co.
c. Weapons:
Observed in the 657th Regt: 10 x 80mm mortars, (30 rd ea), 8 HMG (1000 rd ea), 6 LMG (1000 rd ea). Each man had rifle and 70-100 rd and 2-3 hand grenades.
10 Mar 51 the Engr Bn, consisting of 4 co (40 men ea) was in YUDONG-NI (DS2559). Each man had a rifle and 100 rd, and each Plat had 3 antitank mines.
d. CCF & NK Troops:
21 Feb 51, observed about 400 CCF troops moving S from vic 12 km N of YUDONG-NI. Same day and at same locality, observed approx 1,000 NK troops moving westward. NKA troops seemed to be battle-scarred, and PW believes they were relieved from the front lines.
e. Medical:
Neither saw nor heard of any contagious disease.
f. Food:
Food found in villages was sufficient.
g. Morale:
Morale seemed low (men did not want to fight), because of fatigue.
h. Physical Condition:
Men seemed to be in poor physical condition due to lack of sleep and long continuous marches.
i. Minefields:
Night of 11 Mar 51, observed land mines being placed on a road approx 4 km (road distance) N of YUDONG-NI (DS2559). About 6 mines, spaced about 3 meters apart, were placed on both sides of the road at the base of a slope. There was a small 2-room house alongside the road where the mines were buried and a particularly sharp right curve 1 km S of the slope where the mines were layed.
When he was in the Engr Bn, learned how to lay mines in following manner: two mines would be laid in one hole, one on top of the other, so that when mine on top was detected or pried out, bottom mine would explode.
j. Night Bombing:
Night of 8 Mar 51, UN airplane dropped 3 bombs at a settlement where the Engr Bn was located that burst harmlessly about 2 km away from target.
