1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Although a former officer, he was evidently not observant. Cooperative, and seemed to be sincerely attempting to answer questions. However, except for the detailed unit history, other sections of this report are limited.
Information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
Conscripted 15 Jul 50 with 700 other men at HWANGJU (YC4183), and assigned to the HWANGJU Officer’s Training School. 18 Aug 50, graduated a Jr Lt.
20 Aug 50, sent to SEOUL for assignment with the Liberated Areas Guard Hq and further assigned to the 104th Guard Regt which had recently been activated in SEOUL. The Regt was composed of 90% of South Korean conscripts and 10% North Koreans (Officers and NCO were North Koreans). In the Regt, PW was assigned to the 21st Guard Bn, 1st Co, 3d Plat.
23 Aug 50 marched to KWANGJU (CP1091) and arrived o/c 10 Sep 50. At KWANGJU, the Bn were divided into 3 groups. 21st Bn remained in KWANGJU with the Regt Hq; the 22d was sent to CHIN-DU (CP5340); and the 23d Bn proceeded to WAN-DO (CP0306).
27 Sep 50 the 22d and 23d Bn were ordered to return to KWANGJU to rejoin the 21st Bn and the 104th Guard Regt Hq. 28 Sep 50 the Regt began its retreat, passing through CHONJU and KUMSAN prior to taking trails of the SOBAEK Mountain Range.
Regt marched Northeast to the vicinity of TANYANG (DR4188) and took the trails of the TAEBAEK Mountain Range northward to YANGGU (DT1117), arriving o/a 5 Nov 50. At YANGGU, Regt, numbering approx 700 troops, was reorganized and redesignated as the 3d Regt, 9th Div, II Corps.
10 Nov 50, the 3d Regt marched to INJE (DT2812), arriving o/a 15 Nov 50, and engaged in the ROK Security Police and ROK units. After the withdrawal of the ROK Forces, the Regt occupied the town for two days. During the two days, the villagers were put to work making winter clothes for the Regt.
17 Nov 50, marched to HOEYANG (CT8084) to attack the Security Police and a small ROK Detachment. 20 Nov 50 successfully captured the town and rested until 23 Nov 50. 23 Nov 50 marched to SINAN (DT5346), arriving o/a 25 Nov 50, and engaged to ROK Security Police who withdrew without a fight. 27 Nov 50 marched to HWACH’ON and after a brief exchange of fire defeated the Security Police. 30 Nov 50 marched to TONGCHON (CT1861) and engaged the ROK Forces who withdrew to WONSAN. From TONGCHON marched through HWACH’ON, SINAN, HOEYANG, and arrived CHORWON (CT4233), where it was joined by the 1st and 2d Regt of the 9th Division.
13 Dec 50, the 9th Division departed for YONGCH’ON (CT3118). Between 15 Dec 50 to 16 Dec 50, the Division engaged US Forces in a brief squirmish resulting in the withdrawal of the US Forces.
When the US Forces retreated, the division received orders to report to KUMHWA (CT6538). 20 Dec 50, marched to KUMHWA, arriving o/a 23 Dec 50. At KUMHWA, the Div made contact with the II Corps Hq, 2d, 27th, and 31st Divisions.
25 Dec 50, the II Corps received orders to march across the 38th Parallel. On the same date the 2d Division departed, followed by the 9th Division 26 Dec 50, 31st Division 27 Dec 50 and 27th Division 28 Dec 50.
Three divisions marched southward over mountain trails across the 38th Parallel to KAPYONG (CS6988).
9th Division arrived at KAPYONG o/a 30 Dec 50, and on the next day engaged a ROK unit.
1 Jan 51 the 3 Regt of the 9th Division marched in separate groups to TUNNAE MYON (DS3148), arriving 5 Jan 51.
7 Jan 51, the PW Regt departed for YONGWOL, and the PW was left behind because he could not keep up. 15 Jan 51 the PW Regt retreated from YONGWOL (DS5315) to TUNNAE MYON and the PW was placed under arrest by his Regt CO for failing to attempt to locate his unit.
Between 15 Jan 51 to 5 Feb 51, the 3d Regt was in TUNNAE MYON waiting for further orders. PW was placed in solitary confinement until 5 Feb 51, demoted to Sgt, and transferred to the 2d Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co as a clerk. 2d Bn at that time was at CHAPO RI (DS8572).
2d Regt remained in the CHAPO RI area until 20 Feb 51, awaiting further orders from the division headquarters.
21 Feb 51, Regt marched to CHANDONG (DS8191) and remained there for two days prior to marching to TAEHWA-RI (DS5350). 26 Feb 51, marched to IPORI (CS7040) because its position was discovered by UN aircraft.
1 Mar 51, marched to AMI-DONG, and on the same date, the Regt made contact with an unknown ROK unit. 3 Mar 51, the Regt CO decided to retreat because he was outnumbered and the PW was left behind as rear guard. 4 Mar 51, the PW was captured without resistance.

b. Location and Activities of Unit
2d Regt of the 9th NK Division 4 Mar 51, retreated to an unknown mountain 4 Km North of AMI-DONG (DS5253).

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
2d Regt received fresh supplies of ammo only once in Nov 50 at YANGGU while the 9th Division was undergoing reorganization. Most of the present ammo supplies (also large percentage of weapons) were abandoned by retreating UN Forces.
No known supplies received by the 9th NK Division.
Food was procured from villages and farm houses along the route of march.

f. Signal
Communication equipment in the 9th NK Division was limited to several field phones. In general, runners were used.

g. Medical
Appox 25 cases of frozen feet were observed in the 9th NK Division. Did not observe diseases of communicable or non-communicable nature within the 9th Division.
No medical treatment was available to the division.

h. Morale & Battle Effectiveness.
Morale among the troops in the 9th Division was low because the lack of food, clothing, and medical treatment.
Because of the low morale, the PW estimates the 9th NK Division’s battle effectiveness to be poor.

i. Psychological Warfare
PW was captured and had seen no leaflets.
