1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 071600 I March 51 at CS489551 by US 27th RCT (Extracted from PW card).
INTERROGATOR: CHS

2. ASSESSMENT:
Although he was an officer he did not have any Military Training. He taught soldiers to read and write.
Information seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted into HMG Co, 1st Bn, 342d Regt, 114th Div, 38th Army, 4th Field Army 4 Jun 50 at WUHAN (武漢). Since he was a teacher, he became an officer without undergoing any military training. His chief duty was to teach soldiers to read and write.
38th Army left WUHAN by train and arrived HUNAN SHENG (湖南省) Jul 50.
Army then left HUNAN SHENG by train and arrived KAIYUAN (開原) Aug 50.
During the stay here, PW instructed soldiers to read and write while undergoing infantry training.
Oct 50, Army left KAIYUAN by train and arrived MANPOJIN (BA7259).
Departed on foot and passed KAECHON (YD4998) Dec 50 and arrived vicinity of capture (CS489551) Feb 51.
During his move southward, PW was unaware of exact route taken. However, he knew that 38th Army had participated in two engagements during its move into S KOREA.

b. Location and Activities of Units (as of 7 Mar 51):
Co was to defend HAN River in vicinity of area of his capture.
1st Bn Hq was in vicinity CS4855.

38th Army: 112th, 113th & 114th Div, Service & Supply Unit, Arty Regt (Hearsay).
114th Div: 340th, 341st & 342d Rifle Regt, Service & Supply Unit, Arty Bn (Hearsay).
342d Regt: 1st, 2d & 3d Rifle Bn, 1 Mortar Co, 1 Supply Unit, 1 Med Unit.
1st Bn: 1st, 2d & 3d Rifle Co, HMG Co.
HMG Co: 2 HMG Plat, and 1 Mortar Plat.

e. Replacements:
Feb 51 he saw 9 replacements arrive for HMG Company.

f. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Saw supply personnel bringing in MG ammo many times at various places from Bn Hq area.
Received one pair of shoes near place of capture Feb 51.
Corn flour and millet were brought in from Regt Hq by mess personnel. Other food was procured from villages.

g. Signal:
Co to Bn: Runners
Bn to Regt: Telephone or runners

h. Morale:
Morale of PW Co was low because of poor quality of food.

i. Medical:
There were no epidemics in his company and no immunization or other preventive precautions were taken.
1/3 of men in company were suffering from frostbitten feet. A vaseline-like substance was applied.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW was captured.
Saw UN leaflets near place of capture. Leaflets said: “If you surrender, we will give you food and clothing.”
Doubted leaflets since they were told that officers would be killed. Many others felt the same as PW Did.
