FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1672) 8 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 031300 I March 51 near PYONGCH’ANG (DS 4735) by ROK unit.
INTERROGATOR: K.S.S.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Very responsive and alert. Possessed a good memory for details, and the information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
16 Jul 50, conscripted into the “Volunteer Corps” as a Private at SEOUL.
22 Jul 50, with 200 other “volunteers” transported to WONJU (DS 0734) by truck. Assigned to the 101st Independent Regt (Guard Unit), 19th Bn.
19th Bn was then at WONJU, with a strength of 800 men.
Aug 50, 19th Bn moved to SANGOK DONG (DS 6207), on foot, via CHECH’ON (DS 3010), NAE SONG (DS 7781), YONGYANG (ER 1057) and CHONGSONG (ER 0531). Remained until end of Sep 50, then began to retreat northward.
27 Oct 50, Bn arrived at KANGGYE (BA 0837). Other battalions (7th, 10th and 11th Bn) of 101st Independent Regt also concentrated here and the 101st Regt deactivated. Troops of 101st Regt, 1,200 at this time, were transferred to 12th Div, V Corps 2 Nov 50; PW assigned to 3d Sqd, 3d Plat, 2d Co, 1st Bn, 3d Regt.
12th Div former 7th Div. After redesignation in Oct 50, 12th Div reorganized and reequipped with mortars, HMG, LMG, and new rifles (Russian made). All old rifles replaced with new weapons. 12th Div remained there for one month, training. It then departed south. Prior to departing, PW issued winter clothing, shoes, a cap, and 250 rd of ammo. Most of 12th Div received the above supplies.
O/a 20 Jan 51, Div arrived near HOENGSONG (DS 1049) and engaged a ROK unit. Suffered many casualties and retreated approx. 12 km northward. Remained in that area until 5 Feb 51.
6 Feb 51, Div moved to a mountain near HOENGSONG. 1st Regt engaged UN forces, and 2d and 3d Regiments were in the rear.
8 Feb 51, 3d Regt moved near HONGCHON (DS 0271) 20 km N of HOENGSONG and engaged ROK unit. No casualties suffered. 1st Bn separated from the Regt and rested for a few weeks.
1 Mar 51, 1st Bn moved to a mountain 2 km W of PYONGCHANG (DS 4735), intending to defend it against ROK units.
3 Mar 51, 1st Bn engaged a ROK unit, and PW was captured.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
When observed 12 Mar 51, 3d Regt was in vicinity of PYONG-CHANG (DS 4735); 1st Regt 500m to its rear.
7th Div, V Corps was at ANHUNG-NI (DS0063).
When captured, 1st and 3d Regiments were engaged in combat.

   Up to 2 March 51, 12th Div lost 30 or 40% of its troops in combat.

d. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Each man carried 3 rations and 200 rounds of ammo per rifle.
Received various supplies in one issue at KANGGYE (BA 0837) Dec 50.

e. Morale:
Morale low because of high casualties caused by artillery fire.

f. Medical:
Most of 2d Company’s personnel had frozen feet, but not seriously. These were not treated.

g. Psychological Warfare:
Saw UN leaflets while marching but he could not remember what they said, and anyway, did not believe them.
