ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 4063 17 March 1951
FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1686) 11 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: HWANG, Ha Chong (黃河鐘) (황하종) (NKA)
RANK: Maj
ORGN: II Corps, 10th Div, 27th Regt, 3d Bn
DUTIES: Battalion Commander
EDUCATION: 9 yr
AGE: 28
OCCUPATION: Clerk for a Gold Mining Company
ADDRESS: HAMGYONG PUKTO, HAKSONG GUN, HAKSONG MYON, CHANG HYON-NI, #449 (咸鏡北道 鶴城郡 鶴城面 將峴里 #449)
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 061300 I March 51, at SONGBU DONG (ER 0794) by ROKA soldiers.
INTERROGATOR: GWA

2. ASSESSMENT:
Semi-cooperative; PW suffering from gunshot wounds in his right thigh.
Although PW has been a field grade officer in the 10th Div for the last 10 months, he claimed that he did not know the names of any political officers in the division. Alleged that he did not know the name of a single officer in the battalion that he commanded for 10 days prior to his capture. Stubbornly asserted that he did not know details about the mission of the 10th Division.
In proportion to what an officer of PW rank and grade should know, information seems quite limited although it appears reliable.
Recommended for further interrogation.

e. Replacements:
During Dec 50, 25th Regt received approx 600 replacements while at YANGGU. These were untrained civilians recruited from the populace in and around YANGGU and HWACH’ON (CT 8717).
27th and 29th Regiments received a number of replacements at the same time. Since then the 10th Division has received no replacements.

f. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
10th Div personnel ate once or twice daily. Ration supply depended solely upon food confiscated from villagers.
10th Division received a number of Soviet 82mm mortars, rifles, SMG, HMG, LMG, and ammunition while at YANGGU during Dec 50. This equipment was second hand and was brought from the II Corps Rear Echelon Section which was approx 8 km NW of HWACH’ON. This equipment was transported on “A” frames, oxcarts, and horse courts.

g. Signal:
Equipment available to 10th NKA Div units:
EquipmentUnit
Wireless transmitter-receiver (USSR make).Regiment and Division.
Field Telephones (USSR make).Bn, Regt and Division.
Runners.All units.
Signal Flares.Bn, Regt and Division.
Signal flares were blue and red. A blue flare was used to give the order to “prepare to advance” while the red flare meant “attack!”. Practically the entire 10th Division’s supply of flares has been expended.

h. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Low morale because they were they have very little equipment and ammo and because the division is badly under strength. For the same reason combat efficiency is poor.

f. UN PW:
10th Division has approximately 200 captured ROK troops. These men, PW asserted, are marched with the Div Hq. They are guarded by and are under the complete jurisdiction of the Political Bureau, 10th Div.

j. Medical:
Approximately 5% of 10th Division personnel have typhus fever. They are not treated but are taken to the division’s Medical Battalion which keeps them separate from other men in the battalion.
10th Division personnel have not received immunizations.
Approx 2% of the 10th Division personnel have frostbitten feet. No treatment given as the division has practically no medical supplies.

k. Psychological Warfare:
Did not surrender voluntarily. He was wounded in the right thigh and was captured by ROKA soldiers after his unit abandoned him.
Observed leaflets dropped in the vicinity of POHYON-SAN during the latter part of the Jan 51.
These leaflets promised humane treatment, good food, and medical aid to NKA personnel who surrender to UN forces.
Sullenly insisted that he had no reaction to these leaflets and did not give any thought to them. He admitted reading the leaflets but repeatedly refused to admit that he had given any thought to them.

l. CCF:
PW observed no CCF personnel. Heard that the CCF is in KOREA but knows nothing specific about their whereabouts or activities.

For the AC of S, G-2:
