FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI – 1683) 10 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: NAM, Hak Son (南學善) (남학선) (NKA)
RANK: Pvt
ORGN: 440th Div, 2d Regt, 2d Bn, 3d Co, 1st Plat
DUTIES: Truck Driver
EDUCATION: Primary School (3 years)
AGE: 32
OCCUPATION: Truck Driver
ADDRESS: HAMGYONG PUKTO, NANAM SI, PUNGKOK RI, #93 (함경북도 나남시 풍곡리 九三)
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 140700 I Feb 51 at PAEKCH’ON (BT 6407) by 1st ROK Div, Special Guerrilla Unit.

2. ASSESSMENT:
The career of this PW made him a member of several organization during his short service with NKA. This, coupled with the fact that he was not too observant, has greatly limited the amount of information derived.
Limited information in this reports is not considered too reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted into the 579th BUTAI (Unit), 2d Transportation Bn, 3d Co, at P’YONGYANG in Jul 50.
Between Aug 50 to Sep 50, attempted to rejoin his Transportation Unit which was at ANDONG, after he had become separated because his truck had broke down.
In Sep 50, 20 Km North of WONJU (DS 0734), the PW was discovered and placed into the Independent 586th Company because this unit lacked trucks to pull the 37mm AA guns (3 guns).
In Sep 50, AA Company left the WONJU Area with 2 guns, and arrived at P’YONGYANG in Oct 50. At P’YONGYANG 2 AA Guns and the trucks were destroyed by UN planes.
Fled from P’YONGYANG 20 Oct 50 on foot and arrived SINUIJU (XE 1839) in Nov 50.
AA Company, received 3 AA guns and 3 trucks SINUIJU. Left SINUIJU in Nov 50 by truck and arrived MANPOJIN (BA 7259) in Nov 50.
8 trucks were sent to SINUIJU from MANPOJIN in Dec 50. PW, although one of the selected drivers, could not give any reason for such a move.
After hearing that the AA Company had left MANPOJIN for P’YONGYANG, he hitch-hiked toward P’YONGYANG in Dec 50. But at CHONGJU (XE 9096) in 25 Dec 50, was apprehended by the NKA MP. Since he had no identification, he was placed into the 464th Div, 2d Regt, 2d Bn, 3d Co, 1st Platoon.
12 Jan 51, while salvaging parts for trucks, the 464th Division left for PAEKCH’ON (BT 6407).
Between Jan 51 and 14 Feb 51, the PW was attempting to rejoin his unit and was walking between CHONGJU and PAEKCH’ON when he was captured by the 1st ROK Special Guerrilla Unit 14 Feb 51 near PAEKCH’ON.
In Jan 51 heard that the 464th Division had been redesignated as the 440th Division.

b. T/O & E and Strength of the 440th Division:
PW was in the 440th Division for only approx 10 days when he was separated from his unit; no opportunity to learn about his platoon.

c. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
While traveling from CHONGJU to PAEKCH’ON, received food from Communist Committee after signing certifications that he was a NKA member.
PW did not have any weapons.

d. Armor, Artillery, and Aircraft:
While travelling between CHONGJU to PAEKCH’ON between Jan and Feb 51, the PW did not see other units, armor, artillery, or aircraft.

e. Psychological Warfare:
PW was captured. He had not seen or heard of any US leaflets and/or loudspeaker broadcast.
