1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but not specific. However, under probing provided a limited amount of information which appears to be reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted into NKA at HUNGNAM (CV8010) 15 Aug 50, assigned to 2d Co, 5th Bn, 249th Indep Marine Brigade, and underwent fifteen days of basic rifle training. 249th Indep Marine Brigade was at WONSAN (CU6536) at this time but 5th Bn was detached to HUNGNAM.
14 Sep 50 2d Co, 5th Bn, 249th Brigade left HUNGNAM and marched to CH’ILPYONG (CA4056), arriving 20 Sep 50. There, 2d Co assigned to 2d Bn, 3d Regt, 38th Div which underwent a month’s rifle training. 38th Div remained at CHILPYONG, waiting for clothing supplies to arrive from KANGGYE (BA9837) until 15 Dec 50 when 3d Regt, 38th Div began marching southward.
Ignorant of 38th Div movements but stated that 2d Bn, 3d Regt marched southward through YONGWON (BV8912), MAENGSAN (BU8691), YANGDOK (BU9644), KOKSAN (BT9795), HWACH’ON (CT8717), HONGCH’ON (DS0271), and TAEHWA-RI (DS5350), and arrived PANGNIM-NI (DS5043) 14 Jan 51.
2d Bn continued alone from HONGCH’ON.
14 Jan 51 at PANGNIM-NI 2d Bn was integrated into 27th Div, and redesignated as 2d Bn, 14th Regt, 27th Division.
5 Feb 51 14th Regt marched northwest from PANGNIM-NI 15 km to a small village of 6 or 7 houses, remaining there, as guards, for 10 days. After receiving additional weapons and ammo 14th Regt marched southward to 2 km North of PYONGCH’ANG (DS4735), arriving 20 Feb 51, and marched to CH’ANG-NI (DS5332), remaining for two days, and continued to CHONGSON (DS7036).
25 Feb 51 1st Bn, 14th Regt marched northward to 7 miles south of HAJINBU-RI (DS6265).
7 Mar 51 captured by 3d ROK Regt troops, while traveling from 5th Co to 2d Bn Hq to pick up a message.
7 Mar 51 14th Regt Hq was 1 mile SE of HAJINBU-RI in a village of 10 houses. Its mission was to defend HAJINBU-RI. Various units of 14th Regt were disappeared in the mountains in this area.

b. T/O & E and Strength of: 27th Rifle Div (7 Mar 51)
27th Division: 7th, 14th and 32d Rifle Regiments.
14th Rifle Regiment: 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Battalions.
2d Rifle Battalion (Code: AMNOK GANG) (압록강): 4th, 5th and 6th Rifle Companies, HMG Co (.30 Cal), Mortar Co (50mm), Medical Platoon, and Supply Platoon.
5th Rifle Company: 3 Rifle Platoons, Supply Squad.
2d Rifle Platoon: 1 Rifle Squad.
When 2d Bn, 3d Regt, 38th Div was integrated into the 27th Div at PANGNIM-NI 14 Jan 51, the number of squads in 1st Rifle Platoon, 5th Co were reduced from three squads to one because some men were sent to other units of the 27th Division.

5th Co, 2d Bn, 14th Regt received some replacements from 31st Div which was deactivated 23 Feb 51 at CH’ANG-NI (DS 5632)

c. Personalities:

d. Replacements:
5th Co, 2d Bn received six men from 31st Div 23 Feb 51 at CH’ANG-NI when and where 31st Div was deactivated.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
Food locally procured by the supply squad. This squad purchased corn and rice from civilians in the area. Men received 20 oz of food per day, mostly corn. Two meals per day were standard.
Additional weapons and ammo received by 5th Co, 2d Bn at PANGNIM-NI 14 Jan 51 (grenades, HMG, Rifle and mortar ammo) and 7 miles South of HAJINBU-RI 1 Mar 51 (SMG and Rifle ammo).

f. Signal:
Runners employed up to Bn level. At Bn Hq a runner from each Co is always present. The Bn uses a field phone for communicating with higher echelon units.

g. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Members of Co did not like fighting because they felt they have not had enough training, had not received varied or sufficient diet food, and also because they were tired of sleeping in the mountains and being plagued by sickness.
Most men in 2d Bn, 14th Regt had 15 days of training.

h. UN PW:
1 Mar 51, observed 20 ROK PW moving north on main road between HAJIBU-RI and TAEHWA.

i. Medical:
50% of men in company suffered from frostbitten hands and feet, but only one was sent to the rear. Medicine used to treat frostbite.
Heard of typhus occurring in other companies.
No preventive measures taken.

j. Psychological Warfare:
Saw UN leaflets dropped at CHONGSON (DS 7036) sometime before. These said, in part, “The CCF are barbarians, who steal Korean food. Do not listen to their lies.”
All of the men, including the PW, believe this to be false and regarded the Chinese as their friends.
Political officer told him that the NKA was fighting because the ROK Army had crossed 38th Parallel. It was also claimed the US was attempting to provoke a 3d World War.
