FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1664) 7 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: KIM, Sang Muk (金相黙) (김상묵) (NKA)
RANK: Lieutenant (中尉)
ORGANIZATION: II NK Corps, 10th Div, 25th Regt, 2d Bn, Sig Plat
DUTIES: Plat Ldr
EDUCATION: Industrial School (3 years)
AGE: 23
OCCUPATION: Mechanic
ADDRESS: HAMGYONG PUKTO, MUSAN GUN, YONSA MYON, KUSO RI, (咸鏡北道 茂山郡 延社面 九所里)
DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 201600 I Feb 51 at KUMGONG NI (DR 4892) by ROK Police.
INTERROGATOR: MT

2. ASSESSMENT:
Appeared in good physical condition at time of interrogation.
Cooperative and gave information freely.
Information seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted 5 Aug 48 and sent to Youth Training Center as a member of 2d Sqd, Sig Plat, 3d Bn, 1st Regt, 1st Div at SINUIJU. School directly under 1st Div.
Dec 49, while receiving signal training, promoted to sergeant.
Upon completion of signal training, commissioned Jr Lt Feb 50.
The PW then went to SUKCH’ON (YD2564) where he was assigned to 2d Plat, Tel Co, Sig Bn, 10th Division.
Feb to Jul 50 at SUKCH’ON, served three months as communications instructor.
Jul 50, 10th Div travelled to P’YONGYANG, remaining for approx 15 days.
28 Jul 50, 10th Div (25th, 27th, 29th and an Arty Regt) departed P’YONGYANG by foot and advanced into South KOREA.
Sep 50, 10th Div became disorganized in vicinity of HYOPCH’ON.
PW and two others from Sig Bn retreated northward via TAEBAEK mountain Range, TANYANG, SOBAEK Mountain, arriving CHOMBANG MYON (DT 0452) 20 Nov 50. 10th Div reorganized at CHOMBANGMYON, at which time, PW was assigned to Sig Plat, 2d Bn, 25th Regt, 10th Div.
25 Nov 50, 10th Div (25th, 27th, 29th and an Arty Regt) departed CHOMBANG MYON on foot and advanced south.
25th Regt proceeded to YANGGU where troops were issued winter clothing and to CHUNCHON where 25th Regt engaged UN troops.
10th Div retreated to the 38th Parallel from CHUNCH’ON.
10th Div has replaced by 27th Div at 38th Parallel.
27th Division was former 15th Division.
II NK Corps (2d, 6th, 7th, and 10th Div) departed the 38th Parallel and advanced south, passing TAEBAEK SAN, SOBAEK SAN, PALGON SAN, and arrived KUNWI area Jan 51.
Since then, 10th Div engaged in attacking UN convoys and harassing supply lines.
Other divisions of II NK Corps were on same type of mission as 10th Div.
While 2d Battalion was at KUMGONG NI (DR4892), 1st and 3d Bn of 25th Regt advanced to KORO MYON (DQ8298) 19 Feb 51.
Bn slept in this village and moved to a hill 200500 Feb 51 where the Battalion was attacked by 200th Special Police (ROK).
During the battle, Battalion was completely surrounded and PW and 16 others were captured 201600 I Feb 51.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
Mission of 1st and 2d Battalions, 25th Regt was to set up a road block 2 km west of KORO MYON (19 Feb 51).
25th Regiment lost contact with 10th Div ten days prior to PW capture 20 Feb 51.
10th Div Hq last seen in UISONG 10 Feb 51.

10th Division: 25th, 27th, and 29th Rifle Regiments, Artillery Regiment, Signal Battalion, Medical Battalion, Engineer Battalion, Recon company, Transportation Company, 76mm Gun Company (No weapons), 45mm Gun Company (No weapons), 20mm Gun Company (No weapons), Guard Platoon, Band Platoon, Intelligence Platoon, Judiciary Unit (Plat).
25th Regiment: 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Battalions, 76mm Company (No weapons), 45mm Gun Company (No weapons), 120mm Company (No weapons), Signal Company, Transportation Company, Recon Platoon, Guard Platoon, Intell Section, and Political Section.
2d Battalion: 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Companies, 82mm Mortar Company, HMG Company, Signal Platoon, Supply Platoon, 45mm Gun Platoon, Medical Platoon, AT Gun Platoon.

e. Food, Ammo, and Other Supplies:
Food procured locally. Feb 3 times per day.
While traveling, each man carried 2 rations of rice and 3 rations of MOCHI (rice cakes).

1 Wireless Set in Regiment Headquarters not used because of the lack of batteries.

g. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale was low due to lack of medical attention. After seeing their commanders leave behind the wounded without any medical attention, they feared that they would be similarly ignored if they were wounded. Therefore, many of the troops would retreat without firing at the enemy.

h. Medical:
Half of 25th Regt personnel suffered from fever (believed to be Malaria).
50 men in Regiment suffering from frozen feet.

i. Psychological Warfare:
PW and 16 others captured after they were surrounded. Had seen no leaflets.
