Cooperative but had little military info. What little obtained considered fairly reliable.
a. Chronology:
14 Mar 50: Inducted at CHINNAMP’O. Assigned to NKA 4th Div. Source received 3 mo of military trng.
27 Nov 50: Assigned to 1st Div at KANGGYE. While at KANGGYE 1st Div received unk replacements and units had combat trng (mostly consisted of marching thru at trails at night) and combat lectures, also received anti-US indoctrination.
Troops were issued Russ rifles w/120 rd, winter clothing and two hand grenades each at KANGGYE.
2 Dec 50: The 1st Div, strength 5-6000, dep KANGGYE on foot.
4 Jan 51: Arr KUMCH’ON-KUN received anti-US indoctrination.
31 Jan 51: Dep KUMCH’ON-KUN on foot.
PW has no knowledge of routes taken.
21 Feb 51: Deserted. Captured at CHUCH’ON by 32d RCT.
b. Organization:
III Corps: 1st, 3d and 15th Div.
1st Div: 1st, 2d, 3d Regt, Comm Bn, Engr Bn, and a Med Det.
2d Regt: (2000) 1st, 2d, 3d Bn, Comm Co, and an Engr Co.
5th Co: 1st, 2d, 3d and HMG Plat.
Each rifle Plat (20 men) was equipped with 2 LMG and Russ rifles w/120 rd.
The HMG Plat (12 men) had one HMG and also Russ rifles w/120 rd (all troops two hand grenades ea).
Obs 6 82mm mortars in 2d Bn.
While at KUMCH’ON-KUN 1st Div lost about 40-50 men due to air attacks.
At the time PW deserted, total strength of Div was close to the original strength of 5-6000 men.
c. Intentions:
Intention was to encircle and annihilate UN troops in vic of CHIPYONGNI. (DS8047)
