Average education and approx two years of military service. Cooperative during interrogation but possessed very little information. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Chronology
PW inducted into the 6th Ind Truck Bn (CNA) Oct 49 and was captured by the 39th CCF Army 15 Jan 50. Assigned to the 116th Div, 348th Regt, Hq Security Bn and later to the 2d Bn, 6th Co Hq as clerk.
21 Oct 50, 39th Army departed ANTUNG, MANCHURIA and marched across the YALU River via a railroad bridge. Army arrived in the vicinity of UNSAN 5 Nov 50. Here they attacked UN Forces and occupied UNSAN subsequent to the withdrawal of UN Forces from that city. After resting for five days here, proceeded to CHONGCHONG River where it engaged UN forces. O/a 4 Jan 51, 39th Army arrived at PYONGCHANG-NI (CS2264) via KAECHON, KAESON and UIJONGBU, where it rested for a month.
Marching north of the HAN River, 348th Regt proceeded to YANGPYONG (CS6649) and arrived there 7 Feb 51. It continued its march eastward and arrived at YONGDURE (CS8656) o/a 11 Feb 51. On the following day it marched SE and arrived at an unknown village approx 4 Km N of YONJU on 17 Feb 51, where it bivouaced. PW did not know whether all units of the 39th Army arrived in this area.
When PW woke up, his unit was gone. He was captured while seeking his unit at an unknown village 191200 Feb 51.
b. Organization and Strength (present)
39th Army (Code Name: ■AN HAI Unit), consisted of 115th Div (Code Name: 1st Bn) 116th Div (Code Name: 2d Bn), 117th Div (Code Name: 3d Bn) and attached Hq units.
116th Div composed of 346th, 347th, 348th Regts and attached Hq units.
1st Bn (Code: 2d Region Unit) (二區隊), 2d Bn (Code: 3d Region Unit) (三區隊), 3d Bn (Code: 4th Region Unit) (四區隊), and attached units (Code: 1st Region Unit) (一區隊), composed the 348th Regt.
2d Bn consisted of the 4th Co (4th Plat), 5th Co (5th Plat), 6th Co (6th Plat) and a HMG Co (7th Plat).

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit
As of 17 Feb 51, the 348th Regt CP was located in a small village approx 3 Km NW of YOJU and 2d Bn CP and the HMG co CP were both located on a hill approx 4 Km NW of YOJU and approximately 2 Km NE of main road.

e. Supply
Company received 80 rd of small arms ammo per man and 30 artillery rounds at PYONGCHANG-NI, that were transported from MANCHURIA by trucks. While on the march two or three ammo trucks arrived at Army Hq.
f. Status of Food and Clothing
Food (rice, corn and other grain) was procured locally. A pair of rubber shoes was issued to all troops of the 39th Army at PYONGCHANG NI, while the army rested for 1 month here.
g. Mission and Intention
Heard Co CO state the mission of 348th Regt was to guard and secure main road W of YOJU. Also heard Bn CO state that they intended to rest for two months (Feb to March 51) which was to be followed by a spring offensive pending the arrival of reinforcements.

i. Physical Condition of Troops
Did not know of any communicable diseases, however, 1/5 of the troops suffered from malnutrition.
j. Information on Armor, Eng, Arty, and Other special or technical info
Due to the lack of trained pilots, they were not receiving air support. They were attacked almost daily from the air since entering KOREA and that 20 men were killed in his company.
All the troops feared artillery fire more than air strikes because they were in direct contact with the ground forces possessing artillery power.
k. Propaganda and/or Surrender Leaflets
Saw surrender leaflets on two occasions approx two months ago, however, he did not hear any broadcasts.
l. Morale
Morale among the men was low, because they were attacked from the air constantly, regardless of where they were.
m. UN PW
Saw 200-300 US prisoners at UIJONGBU and heard rumors that the PW were being transported to P’YONGYANG.
n. Foreign Technicians
Stated that there were many Japanese medical officers, Russian technicians and pilot instructors in CHINA.
o. Army Strength
Heard the combined strength of the 1st, 2d, 3d and 4th Field Armies was 4,000,000 men.
