2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared in good physical condition. Cooperative and of average intelligence. Captured with two other soldiers when they were left behind by their platoon because they were ill. Information is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
6th NK Corps was composed of 18th, 19th and an unknown Div.
19th Div had 35th, 36th and 37th Inf Regt.
37th Regt had 3 Rifle Bn, Recon Plat, Signal Co, Transportation Plat, A/W Co, and a Medical Section.
2d Bn had 3 Rifle Co, 82mm Mortar Co, Signal Plat, Medical Plat, Supply Plat, 45mm AT Gun Plat and an AT Rifle Plat.
6th Co had 3 Rifle Plat and an HMG Plat.
PW did not know whether their unit was a reconstituted organization but claimed there were many officers and enlisted men who participated in invasion of South KOREA 1950.
19th Div trained at HUANG JEN, MANCHURIA from 5 Nov 50 to 25 Jan 51. Approx 95% of the personnel were recruits.

b. Unit Assignment and Intention:
PW Plat was to occupy SADANGAM (Vic ONJYON MYON BS6195) and to indoctrinate Security Guards in order to obtain their cooperation. While in MANCHURIA, PW were told by Plat Ldr that CCF had taken TAEGU and PUSAN and that their mission was to occupy captured areas.

c. Disposition:
PW observed many CCF trucks loaded with boxes and men at vic YONGBYON (YE4611), KAECHON (YD5595), and SUNCHON (YD5267). Most of these trucks headed southward.

d. Communications:
Runners were used by Bn and lower echelons. Telephones were used by higher echelons. Oxcarts were used as means of transportation.

f. Morale:
Morale was low because the men had no desire to fight and did not favor communism.

g. Chronology:
PW #396 was conscripted into NKA 2 Oct 50 at HAEJU (YC3813) and immediately sent to HUANG JEN, MANCHURIA, and assigned to his present unit. Received 3 months of basic training. 2 Feb 51, 37th Regt departed HUANG JEN on foot and crossed YALU River 7 Feb 51, into CHOSAN (YF3624), KOREA. Regt continued on foot and arrived NAMCHONJOM (BT7346) via YONGBYON (CS6749), KAECHON (YD5596), SUNCHON (YD5367), SUAN (BT7186), SINGYE (BT8564). 25 Feb 51, 2d Bn, 37th Regt departed NAMCHONJOM and continued southward to village located 8 km south of 38th parallel. PW Plat departed from this village and arrived vic ONJONG MYON (BS6195) 27 Feb 51. 1 Mar 51, PW unit was engaged by UN forces and forced to withdraw. During this withdrawal, PW and four others were captured.

h. Artillery:
PW observed 9x82mm Mortars in a small village approx 6 km S of NAMCHONJOM (BT7346).

i. Chemical:
No gas masks were issued but during basic training the men were taught to put a wet handkerchief or towel over their face in case of a gas attack.

j. Medical:
PW Bn received small pox immunization in MANCHURIA 28 Jan 51. Common cold was the most prevalent sickness in PW Bn. No preventative steps were being taken. Drinking water was obtained from wells and not purified.

k. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food was procured locally and insufficient. No additional ammo was received but present supply was considered sufficient because PW unit was never committed. No additional clothing was received.

l. Psychological Warfare:
PW did not see any UN leaflets or hear any aerial broadcasts.

m. Foreign Advisors, Technicians and Troops:
27 Jan 51, two Russian military officers inspected 37th Regt in MANCHURIA.

n. Epidemic:
27 Feb 51, when PW Plat arrived at village vic ONJONG MYON (BS6195) PW noticed a sign that “There is An Epidemic in the village. Do not Enter”. PW did not know whether or not medical treatment was available.
