Observed approximately ten men suffering from frostbite, six men from flu and everyone was suffering from malnutrition in varying degrees.

j. Propaganda and/or Surrender Leaflets:
Prior to desertion, PW picked up an UN Safe Conduct Surrender leaflet at the location where he deserted his unit, and kept it in his pocket for fear of it being detected in his possession, and read it while he was in the foxhole. Also just prior to his desertion, heard broadcast from a plane. The plane flew close enough so that the broadcast was clearly heard.

k. Morale:
Morale of the unit was low, due to insufficient weapons, equipment. Improper combat training was having its effect also. Another reason was that most of the men in his regiment were formerly with the CNA and captured by CCF.

l. Replacements:
About 50 days ago, three men from each company of the 42d Army were sent to bring back 70 replacements (recruits) for each company of the 42d Army. These reinforcements will probably arrive at the front within a period of ten days. Replacements were to be picked up at LIAOTUNG Province (遼東省), MANCHURIA.
