FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI 0302) 21 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative and answered freely during interrogation. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
39th Army entered KOREA 21 Oct 50 via ANTUNG, MANCHURIA and SINUIJU, KOREA. 25 Oct 50, arrived at UNSAN (YE3928) where they were engaged in combat. After resting for 5 days, marched to SINHUNG-DONG (YE5223) arriving there 31 Oct 50. Here, again, engaged in combat. Captured SINHUNG-DONG, marched to TAECHON (YE1322) where PW and approx 1,000 men were hospitalized for wounds and sickness.
22 Nov 50, 39th Army marched southward.
13 Dec 50, PW and approx 750 others were discharged from the hospital. To catch up with their unit, they then started marching south passing through P’YONGYANG, 38th Parallel and arrived in KOYANG (CS1574) 1 Feb 51, where they met the 116th Div. Departing KOYANG 5 Feb 51, the 116th Div marched south, and 130800 Feb 51, the 3d Bn arrived on a mountain approx 2 Km E (approx CS923360) of where he was captured (CS943360). 116th Div was also in this area.
131500 Feb 51, 3d Bn was shelled and dispersed. For 6 days PW wandered around in the mountains and 191400 Feb 51, he was captured in vic of CS943360 by 7th ROK Regt I&R.

b. Organization and Strength (Present)
39th Army composed of the 115th, 116th, and 117th Div. 116th Div presently approx 6,000 strong, composed of the 346th, 347th, and 348th Regt.
346th Regt presently 1,400 strong, composed of 1st, 2d, and 3d Bn and Ind Mort Co. 3d Bn presently 300 strong, composed of 7th, 8th, 9th, and Hvy Wpns Co. 8th Co presently 80 strong, composed of 1st, 2d, and 3d Plat. 2nd Plat had a present strength of approx 26 men.

c. Deployment of Other Units
While PW was wandering around the hills after his unit scattered, observed in the vicinity where he was captured, approx 2,000 troops of the 116th and 117th Div of the 39th Army. Talked to 2 soldiers who disclosed that they were from the 42nd Army.
10 Feb 51, approx 50 Km SE of KOYANG, observed approx 200 men of the 38th Army heading NW. They were only armed with carbines and M-1 Rifles.

d. Status of Arms and Ammunition
At KOYANG, between 1 Feb and 5 Feb 51, 8th Co received 300 rd of ammunition for each M-1 rifle, 60 rd of ammo for each 60mm mortars, 750 rd for each LMG, and 2 handgrenades per man. All US ammo which he believed was picked up in KOREA.
At present his Co had US M-1 Rifles and carbines with approx 250 rd/ea, two 60mm mortars with 50rd/ea, 5 Canadian made SMG with 200 rd/ea, and 6 LMG with 500 rd/ea. Besides these, each man had 2 handgrenades. There were also 6 anti-tank explosives weighing 4 Kg each.

e. Status of Food and Clothing
4 Feb 51, at KOYANG, approx 20 trucks came with trousers, socks, shoes, towels, fresh pork, and cigarettes. Each man was given the above-mentioned items. Towels and trousers were made in MUKDEN, MANCHURIA.

f. Mission and Intention
Prior to departing KOYANG, PW Co CO state that opposing their positions were 4 UN divisions, and that the 38th, 39th, 41st, and 42nd Armies were going to surround, and annihilate them, then proceed to TAEJON. CCF offensive had already started, and that the 39th Army was the last to enter the fight.

g. Physical Condition
Troops in his unit were not suffering from any physical ailment.

h. Air Support
Around 5 Feb, PW Co CO stated that for the present offensive, RUSSIA was suppose to furnish 1,000 airplanes. PW heard nothing more along this line.

i. Psychological Warfare
Heard air broadcasts twice, however, he could not understand a word said. Observed surrender leaflets on several occasions, but because he could not read, he did not pick them up. Those who did pick them up did not relate their contents fearful of the superiors hearing about it, since they were instructed not to pick up any surrender leaflets.

j. Land Mines
Observed 2 US land mines which their company located. These mines were approx 8 in square and 4 in high. These mines were located by a mine detector, however, he did not know what type of detector it was.
