1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHANG I Sung (張義興)

DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 1 Mar 51, DS 0848
CAPTURING UNIT: 3d Bn , 7th Marines
INTERROGATOR: PFC OKAMURA

2. ASSESSMENT:
Wounded and while hiding in foxhole, captured by the 7th Marines. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission: 3d Bn mission was to defend the hill at DS 0848

b. Strength of Unit:
(1) Original Strength: O/a 6 Nov 50 when unit crossed YALU River.

c. Chronology:
Aug 48 - Inducted into Chinese Nationalist Army at CHANG JA KOU (張家口).
Nov 49 - Captured by CCF at battle of CHANG JA KOU and later conscripted into CCF.
Early part of Nov 50 - 66th Army left CHINA for KOREA.
O/a 6 Nov 50 - Entered KOREA (SINUIJU). Followed mountain trails and arrived 38th parallel 1 Jan 51 without contacting any UN Forces. 196th Div followed 197th and 198th Div as rear guard. 197th and 198th Div separated from 196th Div and took different route South. Troop movements were secret and not revealed.
1 Jan 51 - Unit contacted ROK Troops at 38th Parallel, and after 2 days of fighting overran ROK Army. Unit left for KUMHWA. 66th Corps rested for about 20 days at KUMHWA.
Early part of Feb 51 - Corps left KUMHWA for South and arrived DS 0848 25 Feb 51. PW unit dug in this area until time of his capture. 3d Bn CP located on adjacent hill NW of the place of capture (DS 0848) (believed to be Hill 316 DS 0749).

d. Personalities:
8th Co CO - YANG I Tuo (楊義德)

e. Weapons and Equipment:
3d Bn - 2x82mm Mortars with approximately 60 rd ammo. One mortar with 30 rd ammo were sent back to the rear due to lack of troops.
2 HMG with approx 6000 rd of ammo.
3 LMG. Rest of the troops had Japanese rifles (model 38).
12 Pack Horses.
588th Regt had wireless transmitter and telephones but PW did not know the call number.

f. Status of Supply; Route of Supply:
Did not receive any ammo, clothing or food supply from rear. Shelter was always taken in the mountain. No medical supply. Wounded were carried to the rear.

g. Morale:
Morale was low because of lack of food and ammo. Did not eat nor drink water for 4 days while at the place of capture (DS 0848).

h. Most Feared Weapon:
Air strafing was the most effective weapon used by UN forces.

i. Tactics:
Tactics employed by PW unit. Always used enveloping method.

j. CNA Personnel:
PW was formerly in the Chinese Nationalist Army. About two third of PW unit were former Chinese Nationalist Army personnel.

k. Remarks:
PW was wounded
