2. ASSESSMENT:
PW in good physical condition at time of interrogation. A farmer prior to entering NKA. Average intelligence and cooperative. Information considered fairly reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
1st NK Corps composed of 8th, 19th and 47th Div.
47th Div composed of the 2d, 3d 4th Inf Regt, and 1 Arty Regt.
4th Regt composed of 3 Rifle Bn, 1 Engr Co, 1 A/W Co and 1 Sig Co.
Engr Co composed of 2 Plat.

b. Unit Assignment and Intention:
47th Div assigned to defend area between vic CS195550 and vic CS231537 by setting up defensive positions parallel to KEIGEN RR line.
8th Div assigned to defend eastern sector of SEOUL and the assignment of 17th Div to defend the western sector of SEOUL.
19 Feb 51, at SEOUL, overheard a conversation between Regt Comdr and Regt Comdr of the 8th Div to the effect that the 2d Regt, 47th Div to be reassigned to the 8th Div. Three days later 2d Regt departed the area.
21 Feb 51, heard from a friend 3d Regt was in reserve.

d. Communication:
BN and lower echelons used runners. Regiments and higher echelons used telephones. Line of communications not seriously effected by air strikes.

CHONG, Kwan Sun (정■순), Jr Lt, Plat Ldr, 2d Plat, Engr Co.

f. Morale:
Morale of his unit low because men feared UN fire power.

g. Chronology:
PW conscripted into NKA 30 Oct 50 at his home. Received twenty days of medical training at SAKCHU (XE7372). On 2 Dec 50, twenty aidman including PW and sixty nurses departed SAKCHU for SEOUL, passing thru KUSONG (XE9228), PAKCHON (YE2200), ANJU (YD2888), P’YONGYANG, SARIWON (YC4065), KAESONG (BT8604). Arrived at SEOUL 28 Jan 51.
60 nurses assigned to 18th Hospital in SEOUL and 20 aidman continued to INCH’ON arriving 8 Feb 51. Assigned to units of 47th Div. At this time PW assigned to Engr Co, 4th Regt, 47th Div. 4th Regt departed INCH’ON 12 Feb 51, and arrived at NAMSAN (CS223579) on the same night.
Night of 28 Feb 51, PW sent on amine laying detail with 7 others, in vic CS214524 where they were encountered by a UN patrol. Captured in a brief fight in which the seven others of the detail were killed.

h. Armor:
2 Dec 50, observed 20 tanks (T-34) heading south from SAKCHU (XE7372).

i. Engineer:
PW co did not construct any bridges or repair roads. Land mines and barbed wire abandoned by UN forces at INC’HON were utilized by PW Co.

j. Chemical:
Did not receive any gas masks or take any gas training. No knowledge of chemical grenades.

k. Medical:
Small-pox vaccinations given in 47th Div 25 Feb 51, at SEOUL. 12 Feb 51, 3 men in unit stricken with typhus and were sent to a hospital in SEOUL. Influenza most common sickness in unit. Influenza victims given one tablet of “Phinaschin〃 (phonetic). Medicine manufactured in RUSSIA. Drinking water obtained from wells and purified with unknown white powder.
PW was the only medical aidman in Engr Co. Medical supplies sufficient and transported from SINUIJU to KAESONG (BT8604) by train and from KAESONG to SEOUL by oxcarts. 1st NK Corps had three General Hospitals; one in SAKCHU (XE7372) (capacity 120 patients), and 2 in SINUIJU. Believes above hospitals destroyed by UN air strikes.

l. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food and ammo supplies sufficient. Co ate 3 meals per day. Food was transported from SINUIJU and P’YONGYANG to KAESONG by rail and from KAESONG to front line units by oxcarts. Ammo transported from ANTUNG to KAESONG by rail, and from KAESONG to front line units by oxcarts. Received a pair of shoes and cloth used in lieu of socks at INCH’ON on 6 Feb 51.

m. Replacements:
Unit did not receive any replacements. Wounded personnel were evacuated to rear for medical treatment and upon recovering were either returned to their original units or reassigned to other units. No knowledge of training or replacement centers.

n. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
Did not observe any UN leaflets or hear any aerial broadcasts.

o. Road Blocks and Mine Fields:
300 land mines (wood cased) were planted during the period 14 Feb 51 - 27 Feb 51 in vic CS195550 to vic CS231537. These mines planted 200 meters S and parallel to the KEIGEN RR line. The above mines were 1 ft wide, 1 ft long and 10 in high. The mines were laid 8 meters apart. Mines effective for both personnel and tanks. A barbed wire entanglement constructed 150 meters S and parallel to the minefield. A section, 20 meters wide was left open in vic CS220530.

p. Night Bombing:
Unit received one night bombing attack but did not suffer any casualties.
