FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MID - 0303) 21 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative during interrogation. Unobservant and of seemingly low intelligence. Information was vague and confused. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
343d Regt crossed into KOREA from ANJU o/a Nov 50. Route taken southward passed thru UNSA (YE3927) and vic of P’YONGYANG. Crossed an unknown river over the ice o/a 1 Jan 51. PW company was separated from Regt, 10 days prior to crossing the river. Company then marched southward by way of trails and arrived at a tunnel (believed to be in vic (CS820444), o/a 13 Feb 51). Here PW deserted by remaining behind when the unit moved on. He then proceeded north to an air raid shelter approx 2 Km N of the tunnel and hid. After several days, the rations which he carried gave out, he left his hiding place in search of food and was subsequently captured in the vicinity of (CS813462) on 190900 Feb 51.

b. Organization and Strength (Present):
39th Army consisted of 115th, 116th and 117th Div. Code named the “39th Bn” and “NANHAIPU” (南海部). The 115th Div consisted of 3 Rifle Regt of which PW only knows the 343d Regt. Each of the 3 rifle bn that composed the Regt, consisted of 3 rifle companies and a heavy weapons company. Heavy weapons company was organized into 2 HMG plat and 2 x 82mm mortar plat. There were 140 to 150 men in heavy weapons company as of 13 Feb 51. Since entering KOREA, PW company was attacked by UN aircraft twice, resulting in 2 killed and 6 wounded.

c. Status of Arms, Ammunition, and Equipment:
Heavy weapons co had arms and ammunition as of 13 Feb 51.
Three 82mm mortars 40 rd each.
Two HMG.
Eight Jap 38 model rifles with 60 rd per rifle.
One US SMG M-3 30 rd.
Five automatic pistols (carried by officers).
Two US carbines.
An unk number of men carried one grenade each.
His company has not been engaged since entering KOREA (and up to the time PW deserted), there was no resupply of arms and ammo. One HMG was destroyed in an air attack.

d. Status of Food and Clothing:
Food, which consisted of locally procured rice, was always sufficient.
O/a 20 Jan 51, the men in PW co received one pair of shoes, one pair of socks and one towel each. O/a 5 Jan 51, each man was supplied with a pair of cotton trousers, which were worn over their padded cotton trousers.

f. Physical Condition of Troops:
Men in his company suffered mostly from fatigue due to constant marching. Otherwise, PW knew of no epidemics or other illnesses, except for two casualties from frostbite and one casualty from a stomach ailment.

g. Information on Armor, Eng, Arty, and Other Special or Mechanical Info:
Observed no CCF tanks or arty pieces since entering KOREA.

h. Propaganda and/or Surrender Leaflets:
PW told by Co political officer that the CCF was fighting in KOREA to prevent the US from invading CHINA and that there will be no peace until the US is completely driven from KOREA.
