FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI - 0171 ) 1 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHA Whun Kun (CCF)
AGE: 28

UNIT: 38th Army, 112th Div, 334th Regt, 2nd Bn, 5th Co, 3rd Plat, 7th Sqd
DATE OF CAPTURE: 011400 Feb 51.
PLACE OF CAPTURE: SHANTUNG HSIEN, LINCHE SHIEN, CHANCHA CHUN

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was wounded on left leg by shrapnel. PW was cooperative but was very vague of time and places. Was formerly in Nationalist Army and held a rank of Cpl.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
38th Army crossed the 38th parallel on or about 30 Dec 50 however, route taken after crossing unknown. His Bn (2nd) was the last unit of the Div (112th) to cross. When crossing the parallel PW observed 20 arty pieces each pulled by 1 horse. These pieces were approx 1-1 meters in length. PW did not know whether the arty guns were elements of his Div or of other unit. PW did not observe these or any other arty pieces since then.
2nd Bn arrived at location 3 km directly N of PW place of capture on or about 21 Jan 51. PW company was held as reserve and was put on line 28 Jan 51. 291500 Jan 51 PW Company shelled and his Company retreated N. PW was wounded and observed one other wounded. At the time of the shelling the 1st Bn of the 334th Regt was approx 2 km E of PW Bn and the 3rd Bn located 2 km W. 28 Jan 51 PW overheard that an unknown Regt was located to their right. PW had no knowledge how far N his Company retreated. PW was able to find shelter at a foot of a hill until captured by 1st Bn, 5th RCT on 011400 Feb 51. During this period no CCF were observed. PW did not observe nor hear of other CCF units in vic.

b. Organization:
112th Div: 334th, 335th and 336th Regt.
334th Regt: 3 Inf Bn.
Each Bn is composed of 3 Rifle Co, 1 HMG Co.

5th Co: 2 x 60mm mortars, 6 LMG Japanese rifles.
HMG Co: 6 HMG, 2 x 81mm mortars, MG all U.S. made

e. Ammo:
40 rd: for rifles were issued approx 15 days ago. No re-issue known to PW. Mortar and MG ammo unk.

f. Food:
All food is procured from villages. Sufficient supply on hand.

g. Vehicles: None observed.

h. Morale:
Morale among troops appeared to be very low. The troops appeared to be completely exhausted. 3-4 men in each sqds were suffering from frost-bitten feet. No medical care given.

i. Leaflets:
PW unable to read them but heard others discuss it. They wondered if the promises were true. Officers discouraged the men from reading leaflets.
