Evaluation: PW answered questions freely, but information seems not too reliable, due to his ignorance and his short tine in service (2 months)、Not recommended for further interrogation.
o/a 18 Jan 51 PW separated from his unit at a. place approx 4 KM N of YONGWOL, due to frost-bite. He was going back io his home in HEANGHEI-DO, YONGBYEK GUN, SUN-MYON, CHANGSAN-RI on the way he met 2 other stragglers at PYONGCHANG and accompanied them, but PW and one other were captured by Rangers and the other was killed, 14 miles NE of WONJU,
o/a 5 Dec 50, u/k strength of 9th Div left MAENGSAN, NK by foot and arrived at village, approx 4 KM N of YONGWOL o/a 10 Jan 51. Enroute, unit picked up civilians who were of military age and stragglers in order to increase their strength.
Soon after arriving at above-mentioned location, they engaged UN Force for few hours. They were resting at this location until 18 Jan 51, but they started N on the night of 18 Jan. PW was unable to follow them due to frost-bite.
As of 18 Jan, 8th Regt 9th Div consisting of 1000 men were armed with approx 10 81mm mortars (believed to be US made), 10 HMG, 1 LMG ea Plat (100 to 200 rd ea): Russian made rifles (20 rd ea) M-1 Rifles more than 100 rd ea), Japanese model 99 rifles (more than 100 rd ea) and PPSH Tommy guns to every Plat Ldr (1 magazine ea). No ammo supply after arriving in SK and also food supply, but food was gathered from nearby villages.
PW heard from friend 3rd Brig was dissolved o/a 30 Dec 50 and personnel (approx 1000 men) were assigned to 9th Div,
o/a 8 Jan 51 PW heard 9th Div was going to engage guerrilla action, but PW has no knowledge of location.
29 Jan 51 PW observed 5 NK soldiers armed with PPSH SMG in one of the houses in a village approx 3 KM, E of the location where PW was captured, PW later heard from village people these soldiers were members of a patrol from an unk unit.
PW heard, several soldiers of 6th Bn were suffering from typhus, but they do not have drugs for disease.
10% of unit are suffering from frost-bite.
