Evaluation:
Sources were very cooperative and willing to answer all questions asked, but information of the enemy was limited because they were PW. What little information obtained seems fairly reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.
Sources were captured by the 1st Regt, 9th Div NKA 15 Jan 51 at YONGWOL (DS5415) and taken E 20 KM to a small village in the TAEBAEK Mt, where they stayed for 2 days. At this time, observed an estimated 4,000 troops which they later learned were troops from the 1st, 2nd 3rd Regts of the 7th Div. Information of the 31st Div being in the area was also obtained.
19 Jan 51 the 7th Div retreated W to ILGOL (DS4118). Enroute overheard that the Div was withdrawing to PEN CHAN to join CCF and pick up arty.
21 Jan 51 sources escaped from the NK at ILGOL and hid in village about 1200 meters E of ILGOL and spent the night. The next day about 1300 hr the 21st Regt 8th ROK Div entered this village and came out of hiding. They stayed with the 21st Regt at CHE CHON and were then turned over to UN Forces.
Weapons (1 Regt) 80% armed - PPSH, SMG, rifles, M-1 Rifles, US carbines. Men carrying rifles had 50 rd and others with automatic weapons had 150-200 rd. 2 x 82mm mortars.
Clothing: 60% cotton padded winter uniform; 10% summer uniform with overcoat, 20% civilian clothing and 10% US old type overcoat.
Food: Insufficient.
Morale: Very low, because of continued air and artillery bombardment. Majority of troops are tired, cold and hungry.
Physical condition: Many of the troops were exhausted and weak from cold weather and hunger.
